Windows will install on a Mac without the BootCamp application. What BootCamp does is allow you to partition your drive graphically and non destructively and it burns a disk with all the necessary drivers for Windows to run on a Mac. If you have a driver disk from a previous version you can run Windows just fine but you'll have to manually partition your disk if you don't already have a partition for Windows.
I believe 1.4 was the last.
If you got your MBP in September, check to make sure you're not eligible for a free—well, you'll have to pay shipping and handling—upgrade to Leopard.
