My laptop emits static charge and freezes if I move it...why?

Sometimes if I move my laptop around, it'll freeze up and I have to press the power button for three seconds to turn it off/turn it on again. Anyone heard of this problem before?

Also sometimes when I lift the laptop from the sides/bottom, I get shocked like every second...it's very annoying/kinda painful.

Advice please!!!

Best advice is to call Dell, and have them take a look at it.

Whatever the solution is, will require someone at the very least to open the laptop up... possibly replace some parts. If it's still under warranty, call Dell and have them take care of it for you.

This is not normal. I have troble thinking it is a static discharge as that would happen one time when you first touched the laptop and NOT constantly. Sounds like you got a short. Does it only happen with teh adapter connected?

Call Dell and tell them what is going on!

Well if there was a loose connection with the HDD, or other internal component then it would make sense that when its physically moved you are getting the lockups. I would suspect its the hard drive. I would if I was you, pull the hard drive out and re-insert it, secure it and see if it keeps doing this. Could just be the drive is not seated just right or some dust or something is interfering with the connection. Its not common but the only thing I can think of that would physically make a system lock up like this to me would be if the drive either was not powered up, or shut off for some reason or the connection was bad. Once the OS tried to do anything all it had to go on what was running in memory then thats it, hard freeze. Only fix would be to reboot. I would also suspect some power management feature not working properly and maybe that could also cause the same problem, shutting power to the drive pre-maturely.

Try re-seating the drive first. Then try setting the power profile to always on, and see if it still does it.

But what about the original posters comments: "I get shocked like every second...it's very annoying/kinda painful"

I got to believe that something else is wrong. This is no little static discharge you get on initial contact , sounds like they are getting a continuous shock!

Well that certainly is strange I am not entirely too sure the materials used for the case are conductive (Plastic and magnesium I think). If there is a gross short in a circuit that is grounding out and causing actual pain, then it could explain the system hanging for no reason, especially if its discharging more energy than the ac or battery can keep up with. If this is the case I would seriously have the poster pull the power, and battery from the unit, and contact Dell imediately for a replacement. I would at that point consider the unit an actual danger. Especially if its emitting enough juice to shock to a lvl that is painful every time.

If it was my machine, I would get it replaced ASAP....

Agreed.

If I were Dell, I would have someone pick it up that day!
