m5550 is very loud

Hello... I am returning from a long hiatus

I purchased my m5550 in august of last year and for the last 2 or 3 months I have been concerned about the loudness of it. My fans are on virtually all the time. It is nice and peaceful when I turn it on but within 5 minutes the fans rev up and settle down a bit but are still incredible loud. Its getting to be a bit annoying.

I dont have a cooling pad, and I know that I should. However, I never had this problem before so Im not sure why its suddenly being like this. I am also out of warranty so asking alienware wouldnt be much use.

My thoughts, perhaps a fan is damaged or something? Im not sure. I tried using compressed air to clean the fans (in case of dust... but I just shot the air through the vents, not sure if I am supposed to open up my laptop and in that case I would be really nervous about doing that without knowing exactly how to go about it).

Anyways, it runs hot like any of alienware lappy, but its nothing that should warrant the fans being loud and on constantly.

Any ideas and help is appreciated. Thanks!!

What are the temps on the your CPU?

The fans turn off only when it reaches 45C or lower. (Speedfan - 30C)
They kick on when your processor hits 55C (Speedfan - 40C) and stays on until it cools below 45C. But, then the CPU heats up again from the fan not blowing and the process begins over again...that's why you hear it come on and off every so often.

The fan is loud and that's normal for this lappy, so I don't think there is anything wrong with your computer. It blows to keep your m5550 from overheating!

To keep the CPU from heating up so often, a lot of other m5550 owners in other forums underclock their CPU. Btw, I also have a laptop cooler but it doesn't help much. Your problem sounds like maybe the air intake panel is clogged up. You should open up the bottom panel of the laptop. Don't worry, you won't break it. Just use the compressed air to give it a good dusting. You got to blow the dust and air out of the vents, not into it! I've dusted my m5550 before.

Thanks!

I think that because I haven't been able to properly dust it and since before it never was loud dust is probably a huge factor.

Could you tell me exactly how to go about opening the bottom panel and what to do? Im so accident prone. I need something like the dummies guide to cleaning a m5550

edit: and I have no idea what the temps are

Here's a link to the alienware website that shows you how to remove the bottom panel. You don't need a password to access this.

Linky

There are other faqs, if you need them.

Try installin NHC: Notebook Hardware Control. Just google, download and install. This proggy will show you your temps.

I agree, remove the underpanels for blowing air and try not to blow the dirt inside the lappy.

Just sounds like dust buildup to me.

Thank you for all your help

I followed the directions that was linked to remove the service panel and took a look at my fans. They werent that dusty but I used my compressed air regardless. Also, I dont know if this is normal or not but when I touch my fan its almost spring loaded and jiggles alot back and forth lol.

When I turned on my computer the date was set to march 03, 2018!! I have no idea why that would happen :/ and my wireless was searching for signal (it said... but I was online) until I turned off my computer. That was weird.

The fan doesnt sound AS loud but im still concerned with how often it comes on. I have had a rare few moments of silence since last night I only wish they lasted longer. I dont know if I missed something in the cleaning or not resultig in such short periods of no fans being on when I think it should be a lot less.

I also got a little in the cleaning frenzy and took my keyboard out too haha.

Your welcome. Is it still trying to search for wireless connections while you are online?

Nope, that problem has been fixed! Good thing

Too bad its still a bit loud though... I guess ill just have to deal with it. Maybe a cooling pad will help. I should just invest in one
