Why do we even need centrino and the likes?

I was about to get a 5:6 at powernotebooks.com but then i realized I could just get a 5690. Buy a car/airplane adapter and a universal adapter and be good to go. The only person who needs it the most would be people in college during classes, but I don't know why you would use your computer during class. Oh yea anyone that owns a 5680 is the 1600 by 1200 too small?

I think Centrino is marketed to petite women and the elderly, who would be concerned about an extra two lbs in a notebook.
Yes real men shouldn't care about that extra two pounds. The ones that do are whooshes.

There are or can be alot of use during class... For example, record lecture, take notes, watch movie or listen to music during breaks in a 2-3hr class or if you already know what the professor is talking about or if he or she is just plain boring, and if the univeristy you are in has WiFi, go online...

Why would any one want to carry unnecessary weight? Your "real men" comment is very questionable, do "real men" = "intelligent men"? The two pounds makes alot of differences when you are on the run in a large campus that's like a city itself...

Sounds like you are assuming everyone on the planet is in college AzN. Ummm... no.

I bought mine for my mobile business.

Graduate, then figure it out I guess!

I don't think I can graduate since I am 13...

As for the airplane adapter statement, I don't think all airlines offer adapters for non business class passangers. I know I just took 3 flights in the last week and did not see a place to plug in the adapter.

It's not just college students. In business it is also handy to have a more mobile arrangement then a P4 offers. Meetings, etc. No one wants to wait while you fumble around for cords, etc. Just walk in, turn it on and start.
As for the weight, if you simply must lug about extra weight, sew some lead into your clothes.

depends on the airline. But I don't know of any that offer it n coach. SAS offers it in Coach-Plus, as I recall.

mmmm... lets see.

To be more effective at taking notes.
To be able to record a lecture if needed.
To watch a movie when class is boring.
To listen to some music.
To play some games.
To type a document for another class.
Do homework for other classes.

If I read your other response right, and you are 13, then of course you would have no idea as to why someone would want to take their notebook to a class, and you probably dont need to. I am guessing you still get your "recess" and you worry about what youll do then.

Why do we need centrino and the likes?
-Because some people arent in the position in which they can have adapters whereever they need to use their notebook. When I have gone to excavation sites with some anthropologist friends, or when I have been out in the desert studying the Taraumara indians of Mexico, there is no place where you can plug in your notebook, and therefore you need as much battery life as possible. Also, I could think of many other situations in which a person would need them, because the fact is, not everybody is content with a 2 hour battery life that machines like the 56xx series provides.

Oh, and to answer your last question about the screen resolution. No 1600x1200 wont be too small.

And to cap all the above, the reason there are centrino computers is because there's a market for them. Doh! If there were no market for them, then Intel and others wouldn't make them because noone would buy them.

Generally, for anything that gets made, its because there's a market for it. At least anything that gets made in any kind of quantity for more than a year or two.

And I really don't understand the notion that if a particular type of machine doesn't suit you, why you would assume it has no purpose. You (and that goes for all of you) are not the only ones in the world. The rest of us may have wildly differing needs and wants. What, it offends you that something exists you don't want or need? If you don't appreciate what a particular item offers, don't buy it. If enough people agree with you, it will go away, I gaurantee it. Simple solution. However, if it turns out you are wrong, rest assured, its unlikely we will require you be discontinued.

Remember what Piaget said about children, that they can only see things from their perspective.

And has anybody carried a notebook in a messenger bag or in their hands a la briefcase? Even at 6 lbs., my F2 is *not* light; it actually does hurt the shoulder that I sling it on after walking for a moderate period of time (like 20-30 minutes) like across the campus several times to run a few errands. I'd hate to have to shoulder 12 lbs. on my shoulder instead of 6.

Then again, I just watched Matrix Reloaded on my bed last night without having bother with an adapter. I'd doubt a P4 or even an AMD64 would last that long.

I thought they grew out of that phase around 8 years old?
I think it's around 4 to 6. My memory is getting fuzzy; 8 sounds more like Erikson. [correct me if I am completely off]

Anyhoo, boys get a second injection of testosteron around 13, so it's not surprising why kids that age don't think clearly.

My first notebook was a Hitachi Visionbook Pro PII 266, and the bloody thing weighs around 9lbs. Yes it's fine when you carry it between a class or two, but it got heavier as the day went on. Plus, the thing went through the battery so fast I couldn't do much HW between classes, and sometimes I had hours between classes.

Between sample products, projecter and what nots I carry through the airport now, every pound counts.

LOL, I love how this has turned into a dicussion about hormones in teenagers!

I hope AzN has learned his lesson: never say you're 13 online... ever.

No one even mentioned heat or noise issues with a P4 in class or elsewhere. A centrino in a notebook makes lots of sense for lots of reasons.

Exactly, our society is a technology deterministic one. So the drive for release of new technology is not because we can, but rather there's a demand for it in the social context. This is what you learn in first year communication and economic university classes...
