Desktop or new laptop? - Page 2

Actually a XPS 410 sits in the outlet right now scratch+dent but for only about $1190 for a Q6600-2gb ram-8800GTX-X-Fi Extreme music-320gb HD I'd say it's a damn good steal

A steal indeed! But unfortunately I have exhausted my "capital" budget for this year, so I'm looking at perhaps middle of next year to get my quad core.

Ahh it's nothing to really frown about, by then the prices will probably have dropped on the penryn down to $250-$270 which will be nice

Plus it's not like any programs currently make use of the quads anyway

you should check the link i provided, 400 dollars vs over 700 dollars is still saving.....the video card and ram on the link i gave can be sold easily here, and with ram prices so dirt cheap, and the 8800gt being so cheap with the nice preformence you get......

youd have a true, nice build quality and nice quality part gaming rig and still have saved money

It comes down to how much he wants to upgrade. If he wants upgrades to last him a long time, then he's going to want something not so crammed.

Also, no intent to really bash, but these days the popularity of the FS forum seems to be down the hole

I always look at the FS section (actually I bought my opteron rig from there a while back) and I've seen asspenny's FS post. Pretty reasonable price for the system but not something I'm looking for.

Not really, I've owned several IGP motherboards and none of them were crap. From the original nForce on up to an Intel i915GM motherboard in my HTPC.(yes, I have a mobile chipset that's NOT in a laptop). Alot of times onboard video is unavoidable in the lower cost motherboards. And Soulsaver is right, onboard video is a worthwhile backup should his video card fail. I'd be out a HTPC if it weren't for that motherboard having onboard Intel graphics. stupid Gigabyte didn't fix my video card that I had in there and I haven't had time in months to screw around with them on the phone trying to get them to fix it right.

Well, thanks for all your input. I've decided just to buy a desktop. I got the Dell Vostro 200 Mini Tower along with a 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor for $630 w/ tax and shipping. Another ~100 for a video video card, and i still have money left over to upgrade 2GB ram to 4GB. Complete specs are below btw.

I know you guys would probably bash me for "buying" a desktop instead of building one but I'm not looking for insane performance or nice cool computer cases (well, sorta). The thing is, for me being in college, gaming is only gonna be whenever I get back home, so its more or less occasional gaming, then all the other days would be studying or working on projects and such.

Again, I took everyone's input into consideration. So thanks.

Specs:

2.33GHz (4MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB) Intel Core 2 Duo E6550
2.0GB DDR2 PC2-5300 Memory
80GB Hard Disk Drive @ 7200RPM
Intel Integrated X3100 (Upgrading to nVidia 8600GT @ 256MB GDDR3)
16x DVD+/-RW Burner

Now I just have to tell the parents I got a nice large package coming in and I completely paid for it. lol

The only thing I don't agree with is spending extra money on a more expensive motherboard. Chances are a cheaper motherboard will give you all the options your going to use anyway.

The only things you need to look at really are.

Max memory supported. (4Gb should be plenty for a while now, but you never know, I'd probably opt for something with a little more, just incase.)
Dual PCI express slots, if you plan on getting two video cards. Even getting a "budget" video card now, and picking up the same card at a later time or something.

Enough expansions slots to handle whatever you might throw at it. PCI slots is what I am referring to here.

You can still spend a lot less on a motherboard with all that then going all out on some "not needed" motherboard.

I'm going to disagree with the cheap motherboard suggestion. The motherboard is the piece that gives you the communications between all these other powerful parts and the cheapie boards usually give you what you pay for. While you don't need to spend 300 on a board i wouldn't suggest the ECS boards unless you like having to troubleshoot most of your time.

Define cheap as dirt? There's inexpensive and then there is cheap...

When I hear cheap I'm thinking sub $60 range ala this and DFI has a good reputation so I would buy them.

I agree, I think a $100 board would fall into the regular or hot deal bin for a good board, but I'd say that under $60 is where I say cheap belongs.

I'm talking about current motherboards.. That blood iron is new, not three years old like that 754 socket from amd.

100 for current crap, is cheap to me.
well yeah but if you're going cheap, you're going to be buying the lowest on the totem pole if you're buying newest you'll probably have a larger more appropriate budget is my assumption

well, while you guys chat on about motherboards and such.. lol.. I got my desktop today and video card. Both things came on the same day which is nice. I must say the 20" widescreen LCD is nice but its kinda small.. I expected it to be bigger for some reason. The system is completely silent for the most part. Pretty cheap, great for now. Maybe when I get more money, I'll be able to upgrade more but right now, I'm pretty happy. Oh, and pix later for you pix whores.
