hard drive and memory upgrade for dell 600m

Hello,

I own dell 600m. I am confused these days between buying thinkpad T61P or upgrading my Dell 600m. I need help from friends in this forum.

I am thinking of installing new sata hard drive which spins at 7200 rpm and has data rate of 3GB/s. can i install this hard drive in my dell 600m ? is it compatible ?
I understand that maximum memory i can install in my Dell 600m is 2 GB. is that correct ? I have two 512 MB memory modules now in my Dell 600m. can i replace both of them with 1 GB with total of 2 GB for complete system.

Now second thought is if upgrading Dell 600m is worth it? I do not know if i really need Duo processor unless i can really write programs which can use parallelism of Duo. I am mainly interested in high speed hard drive and more memory which i assume will increase performance of laptop a lot ? can anyone please correct me here if i am wrong.

600m is PATA not SATA. You can get a 7200RPM HDD for the PATA interface but your choices are not as common in the higher capacities like there are for SATA (which is a newer interace and the standard going forward). You can install 2 X 1GB sticks in your 600m PC2700 DDR will work as will PC2100. It's more of a personal choice as to wether or not to upgrade or buy new. If the 600m is working for you you might put money into and upgrade to hold you for a year but I'm not sure how much more you can wring out of that system. What Processor do you have in there now?

My processor is Intel Pentium M Dothan 1.5 GHz ( 2 MB L2 Cache )
socket 479mPGA

Honestly, I'd get a new system. I really like my 600m but I'm dying to upgrade to a 1420. Unfortunately I can't do so for about a year but if you have the money now, I'd say it's more worth it to get a new system then upgrade a very dated system.

hey RRF,

I already upgraded now. I was really confused for some time between upgrading or buying new laptop but it is already done now.

Now i am having another issue

I installed windows XP Pro on new hard drive and trying to set up drivers etc. on my new installation of windows XP Pro.

I have Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Installed in my laptop and i downloaded latest drivers from intel website as well as dell website and installed drivers as well as utilities. My wireless card can see all wireless connections but when i try to connect to my wireless connection ( it is secure and i entered KEY properly )
, it does not connect.

what could be wrong ?

Hopefully, nothing is wrong. Shut down your modem and router. Reboot your modem first, then your router. Then try to connect you laptop again.

Sometimes, you need to reset your router so it will assign an address to your laptop wireless card. Altough it's the same old card, you have given it new drivers.

Let know if this works.

If it still doesn't work, consider going the 802.11n route with a MiniPCI module that will fit the 600.

This one fit my i8600, and should work in the 600 series if it can handle a full-size MiniPCI card:
