E1705 7900GS swapped 3 times..... - Page 2

Well naturally, and to be honest put in those shoes I could see trying to weasel one of those M1710's out of them myself

But I do try to advise people into the moral/honest lane

Ok guys, let's get some things straight here...
I used my e1705 as a general purpose laptop and some gaming (hence the 7900GS) and in the weekends I used it to mix MP3's as a DJ.
I perform before quite a large crowd who pay entrance fee's to that club. Imagine what happens if the 7900GS blows up during a gig.... THat is what I stated to Dell....I need a reliable laptop that performs the same or better than the e1705. I could have chosen a laptop with a quadro card when I bought it but I didn't. I wanted a Geforce. So now I want a Geforce as a replacement. Simple.

So for you guys out there that think I want to cheat Dell into giving me a 1710..... NO, I just want a laptop with a similar Geforce, and with similar looks...As a DJ everyone sees my laptop and that is why I bought the e1705 with a nice snap-on cover. So on multiple fronts the M90 doesn't match my expectations...

After some research on some forums and on the Dell website, the only laptop that does meet my expectations is the M1710.
It looks nice, and has got a Geforce vid-card, and has DVI.
It still sells here in Holland with the 7900GS, but I really won't accept another laptop with that card. So the only laptop for sale here with a Geforce card that matches my 7900 is a laptop with a 7950...And it just happens to be the M1710. I would gladly accept a e1705 with another Geforce card...but there arent any.

On my e1705 every part has been swapped 3 times...Motherboard, Processor, Memory, coolers, LCD screen...the works....and STILL 3 7900GS cards blow up in 1 month.
Those are my reasons to ask Dell such a replacement, not to cheat Dell out of a M1710 just for the bling factor....come on guys, I'm not 16 anymore...

I'll be getting a call today, so I'll let u know what happens...
Maybe they'll send me a 1730 fully loaded...;-) just kidding.

@Stigmata,

"Ricky seems to think (probably due to the Dell-owes-me-the-world attitude on these forums) that because he was inconvenienced for a month, Dell owes him a laptop worth several hundred dollars more than he paid for."

No, I just want a laptop with DVI and Geforce card....Like the one I bought...

There is ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUADRO AND A GEFORCE VIDEO CARD! The only difference is the BIOS on the card that adds CAD and OpenGL certification. The M90 was a MORE than acceptable replacement. Performance between a Quadro and an equivalent GeForce are well within the margin of error.

As far as other looks of the M90, it's not that much different from the 1705. And you could have bought the lid assembly from a 1705 off eBay or from someone on this board and then you'd have quick-snap cover support.

QFT! I'm sick of hearing people says "o well my i9400/E1705 died so therefore Dell had better ship me a M1710", "I'm gonna keep on rejecting everything they have, and demand they send me an XPS". Dell has no obligation to send you a laptop replacement that is worth any more than the one you bought from them. What a load of bunk

Well they are obligated to give you an equal or better replacement, and it's hard to get to equal, so basically they must provide and upgrade unless they have the same model available as yours.

The M90 was definitely fair, and the M1730 is overkill.

Well... I guess Dell decided equal is an M1730... So for all you angry and jealous types out there...this is what I'm getting in stead of my E1705...
And don't tell me Dell is caving in on my numerous requests for a XPS...Dell is a BIG and grown up business and they know what to do....And this is what they did...
I just can't understand people that almost sympathise with big companies such as Dell and tell you not to bug/nagg/complain too much because you don't deserve such an upgrade... If I don't deserve it, they wouldn't have given me one.... I'm just asking here, not demanding. I didn't hold a gun to someone's forehead.
And by asking (and being very polite) I got this:

Dell XPS M1730 Bone White
2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo
1GB Ram
8700M GT 256 MB (Single)
80 GB 7200 Sata
17" 1920 x 1200

As you can see they held back on the minimal configuration, like 80 GB instead of 200, and 256 MB 8700 instead of 512.....But hey...I'm not complaining. I'll upgrade HDD and RAM later on... and maybe also to the 8800 512 MB!

I guess my nagging was worth the while. Me is happy.:-)

Keep you posted on how the XPS works.....;-)

NO SLI?????????????????????

Dude, sorry to tell you this, but a single 8700GT is at least half a 7900GS OC at 1920x1200... Im telling you this cuz I own the same config with the dual videocard and Im getting less or equal FPS as the Quadro 2500M I had on my old M90...

Wow. I don't post at all anymore, because there's never anything interesting to say, and I check NBF a few times a month to see if anything new has come out, but I'm surprised my few posts sparked such a discussion.

As far as me being angry and jealous, I'm not. I was in a worse situation than you (screwed without a laptop during finals, overall two month return time to get my laptop fixed), and I knew that Dell had a history of being nice to anal customers, and I decided not to take advantage of that.

Congratulations on your new laptop, which turns out to be an upgrade in every single aspect (except for the video card, which is kind of ironic). I'm obviously not going to convince you that what you did was wrong, or anyone else reading this for that matter. You refuse to listen to any single point I've made, so there's no real point in posting anymore. Back to lurking.

@Stigmata...
I wasn't referring to you as being angry and jealous...
And indeed.. Dell just doesn't want me to have a better VGA card than the 7900GS.... Dunno why.... I'll have to upgrade later myself.
But the rest is really generous of Dell.

Yeah, hate to break it to you, but the single 8700M isn't what I'd consider a fair replacement to the 7900 GS. As many others have said, the M90 was a MORE than fair replacement to the E1705. In honesty, had I not gotten the first M1710 in my sig as a replacement for MY E1705, I would have taken an M90, but it wasn't offered. Then again, I fought for over a month without any laptop (due to Dell's sending me 1 1720, a REALLY low-balled M1710, and finally the one you see as the first laptop in my sig).

The only upside to the M1730 is the (let's hope) possibility to upgrade to either a single, or if Dell offers it, dual GeForce 8800M GTX's when they're released for the laptop.

Exactly what I said... I just hope that they offer this, so that I can get a proper graphics card... The 8700Sli, even in XP, its ok at normal resolutions but higher than 1440x900 sux the biggest time, not like the 7900GTX which was way better at 1920x1200...
I'm not angry nor jealous....I'm just saying it how I see it.

I believe that when Dell offers a generally upgraded system, it should've been taken...especially since the quadro's are actually better in that they offer some pros in the engineering dept.

So really, I'd be happy if I got the system you did, or the M90 but I'm just saying that I believe it's overdone. As it turns out, your screaming actually got you a GPU that's worse than that of the M90 you would've gotten

The truth is now reveled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations on the 1730, no point talking about the actual performance differences but the only real advantage on the 1730 is the fact it can be upgraded and would have dx10 capability. still just goes to show what one can achieve by pushing - is it fair...........................well as long as both parties are happy then I don't have any issues.

I'm just cos I don't have one!!!
