im looking to get a gaming notebook for around the £1000 marc n have been looking at the Inspiron 1720, the only thing that puts me off is iv heard the 256MB GeForce Go 8600M GT that it comes with is a poor performer, just looking for a little input on if this is a good idea or mabe some sugestions for othere laptops around this price range.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but if that is 1000 pounds, I think that is around $2000 US. So going by that you could get an SLI laptop with 2 x 8600 GT's - the Toshiba x205-sli1. Alone the 8600Gt's are ok, nothing mind blowing but the two of them in SLI do very, very well. It is a very good buy for around $1900 US, plus you could get 4gb of memory and sell the old and still be around your $2000. I am much happier with this thing than I was with my old 1710 XPS that had a 7900GTX in it. The only thing I miss is the better CPU I had (2.33 vs 2.0).

Just wanted to note another option you may not have thought about.
