Problem with Windows Update on shutdown

Thread Starter
Hi,

This is my first post here, so I figured I'd start off with an odd one...

I just recently obtained a refurb Dell E1705 and have encountered a strange problem with windows update when shutting down. Essentially what happens is that every time I shut down the computer, the "shut down" box claims I have updates to install (note that I am not always connected to the internet - I still use dial-up). So, I click on "shut down" and get the typical blue screen where it begins to say "installing update 1 of XX (XX = some random number...it's different everytime I shut down) after a few moments the message changes to "windows is shutting down" and the computer turns off. I know for a fact there are no pending updates to install since I updated the computer at a free wifi spot less than a week ago and it was working fine.

Some additional info: I think all of my problems seem to stem from a bad install of Medal of Honor a few days back, and this may be a tail of this initial issue. Up until that time, everything was working fine. When I tried to install MOHAA, it asked for the second disk, then it froze up after the second disk was inserted. I had to stop the process to get out of it, but it didn't require a complete shutdown. After this, MOHAA would not uninstall, nor would it allow itself to be repaired or re-installed. Immediately after this issue, I began having a "runtime error" with the "Dell Support Center" application on my computer, where it said it couldn't run within the microsoft.net framework. I tried to perform a system restore using a date that preceeded the MOHAA install, but every available date before that came back with a "restore unsucessful" after it ran. I even went to the extent of running the restore CD that came with the computer, but again, no change.

With Dell Support's help (via a chat session) we uninstalled the support center application and the microsoft.net application, then re-installed them. All was well with those two programs after that, but that was when my "windows update" on shutdown issue began. Also note that using some information on the EA games website, I did manage to remove the remnants of the MOHAA software and fix the registry, but this had no impact on my windows update issue

Sorry for the length of the note, but I thought I'd include as much info as possible in case it's relevant to someone with some expertise. Also, I was surprised when I ran the restore CD that it did not return the computer back to the way it was when I initially received it - it left all the programs I've installed on the computer right where they were. Is this normal or did I do something wrong? My experience with restore disks (admittedly a long time ago) was that they returned the computer back to the "as shipped" configuration, which I would be happy with right now if it would fix the issues with my week old computer!

I realize I can just get in touch with Dell, and I may do that the next chance I have to drop in to Panera (for the wifi) but I thought I'd see what you folks had to say since dealing with Dell can be frustrating at times.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

When you did a restore, it put the factory installed programs back to the original state, but left everything else that you had installed. I'd recommend a full format of the hard drive, then reinstall your OS. You should be able to put the disk in the drive, then restart - press F12 at startup and choose to boot from the CD. The options to install Windows should be listed there. Through Windows installation, you should be able to delete your old partition (the one giving you problems) and install a fresh copy on the notebook. You'll have to reinstall everything (and I recommend backing up all of your files before you do this so you don't lose anything) but that should fix your problem.
