169.21

Thread Starter
Tony,

At your convenience, can you evaluate the potential for 169.21?

Thanks!

I'm downloading the official release with laptopvideo2go Modded INF right now.
I'll report here if they are overclockers or not.
If so and if GeforceTony intends on releasing them, I'll switch to his version then.

Overclocking is still broken for me.

Damn it.

I couln't install them, the installation was broken.

Since Nvidia plan on making them the new official Forceware release, I might consider o/c my card through a flash.
I'm gonna test before if there is a performance gain at stock speeds as compared to 169.04.

Thanks for reporting GeforceTony!

nvidia just released 169.25 two drivers in one day ??

STILL cannot overclock with 169.25.

But, strangely, you can UNDERCLOCK with nTune just fine. Problem is, once you underclock, getting back to even NORMAL settings is a hassle. Really no idea what the hell is going on here...

Maybe nVidia is being a bit too buddy-buddy with the manufacturers and OEM's and making it so you can't overclock, thus making the odds of frying a card much less, which means less of a burden on them?

Have you tried RivaTuner?
RivaTuner and ATiTools don't allow either underclocking OR overclocking.

So if you use the official 169.21 and 169.25 drivers on a desktop card, is overclocking disabled for desktop cards as well?

On each release, I read the forums elsewhere and people often say "I can overclock with these" It appears to me specific to certain card models.

FYI, I ran Crysis benchmarks with 169.04. 169.17 and 169.21 at stock clocks they all performed the same. Not even 0.1% of difference.

It's limited to one game and is not 100% scientific, but it's enough to convince myself that 169.04 are great and that our 79xx generation cards have reached drivers maturity.

A simple way around the overclocking problem is to use a driver that works, with an unlocked bios to find your clock speeds. Then you flash those clock speeds in a locked bios and update to the new drivers. This is for anyone who wants to run overclocked with the new drivers.

Yeah, that's what I wanted to do before finding out anything newer than the very good 169.04 didn't show any improvement. I'm glad I spared the hardware flashng hassle.

While this is true Justageek, you have the potential for issues in the future. If there are any issues due to clockspeed, you will be forced to reflash instead of simply rebooting. To each their own though

Also, some don't have the option of flashing to an unlocked BIOS, or don't know how to, and I don't wanna be responsible for breaking people's computers. If they wanna overclock, by all means, they can. Via software, we don't have any responsibility over someone if they bork their computer by overclocking. If we release a driver, and it doesn't allow overclocking via software, and tell them to flash their BIOS and overclock, we have a bit of responsibility there, and I can't be held responsible for that.

It's just better to be safe than sorry, and wait for a driver that supports software overclocking. I'm watching the situation like a hawk.
