Power supplies are also a bit tricky. The higher end brand name power supplies list their wattage in average output. Meaning a 500w PS will give on average 500w. The lower end cheap power supplies list their wattage in MAX output. Meaning a 500w PS will give a max of 500w and will probably short out once it reaches that point.

Moral of this post, buy a good brand and expect to pay over $100 for a good one.

I want you to know that the 9 series is supposed to be 3 times as fast in their respectable categories. I would expect the 9800GTS which would probably be best price/performance, to be about $450 on release, maybe as low as $400 and they will be probably 2 times as fast as the 8800GTX currently.

We have to remember people that this budget is very top notch and we can accommodate the appropriate/great parts

in any case, im intruiged......would these be far more advanced than a dual cores' operation?

PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 $160...this seems reasonable, initially i was thinking that 400-500w was going to be sufficient but i might as well be prepared.
Yes - but way down the road. The next CPU from Intel is a 35nm cpu with an onboard memory controller (kinda like AMD), and will be a different socket. These things aren't supposed to be out until late 2008 to early 2009.

A Penryn quad will take you a LONG way.

There are other power supply choices, but I believe in preparing for my next impulsive purchase =)

Oh - and about Penryns....I read on Fudzilla and Engadget that January 20th is the date for Yorkfield and Wolfdale. They are releasing their mobile versions on the 6th.

I'll weigh in with a few thoughts.

1) The PCP&C 750 Quad Silencer is a good choice ... robust enough for SLI if that's the route you choose to go. I have this PSU ... it is not noisy.

2) MOBO ... that's a tougher one. If you want SLI, I'd definitely look at the new 780i boards that should be readily available by Feb. I don't think SLI is going to be a requirement with the new video cards. I find just one 8800GTX is plenty powerful enough for games like BIOSHOCK and Crysis.

3) Make sure the MOBO is compatible with DDR2 memory, because you probably don't want to pay the extra for DDR3 at this time.

4) IF the new video card selections aren't out by the time you order, I'd think seriously of going with the 8800GT or just one 8800GTX for now. You can probably also pick up a good used 8800GTX or Ultra at that time, but buying used components is always a bit risky.

5) Re cases ... if you're going to aircool, there are lots of choices. The TT Armor is nice, as is the COSMOS (some people don't care for the style). The CoolerMaster Stackers are also good roomy cases. LIAN LI and Silverstone make some good ones, although they can be pricier. Is size/space an issue?

6) Definitely go for at least a 20" LCD display ... but you may be pleasantly surprised at the 22-24 inch prices.

7) RE the CPU ... quads are nice, but don't ignore the dual Cores ... should be some good price/performance deals out there when you buy.

Sounds like a fun project for when you return!

one of the reviewers said that these cards require at least 850w and preferrably more for heat control.........is a 1250w or something along those lines complete overkill?

totally, i am amped just thinking about how to configure; and i am on that $2000 budget that my wife would twitch at if i went over. my biggest thoughts are to be able to upgrade to the high end components as they become cheaper and then mail whatever i am not using down to antarctica in order to build a system down here.

i assume that the 780i boards will be spendy when they first come out, but if i can splurge there, i would rather switch out peripherals than the mb in the next couple years.

Don't trust the reviewers on the Egg.

You can run the QX9650 OCd to 4.8Ghz, 4x1TB drives/2x RAID 0/2 independent, 2x8800Ultras OCd, 2 or 4GB PC10000 DDR2, Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Champion, 2 optical drives, speakers, cooling, you name it, on a PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750.

When they say their 750 is like other's 1KW, they aren't kidding.

space at my house in the states is not a problem; for me, the computer is my entertainment center.

and i figure that without doing any overclocking, that aircooling should be sufficient

my initial thought with having two monitors was that i wouldnt be able to afford a larger screen; but with those 22" models going for $230, i think that i can cross that notion off the wishlist.

Now DAMN - that was fanboish

You said a 'quality' gaming rig.

I think the 8800's should serve you just fine. Sure the 9 series will have more horsepower but the 88's are still respectable plus as others have said, their prices should drop w/ the release of the 9 series. My roommate has an 8800GT and plays Crysis with most settings on very high.

Id say snag like 3/4 GB of RAM since its cheap these days.

OS: Vista will only get better with time. My roommate uses Vista and has had some problems, nothing majoe but probably spent about 2 days troubleshooting.

Take BFG over XFX

Get at least a 22'

thanks ghaz,

tech question.....what is the diff betwixt the bfg and xfx?

i was definitely thinking of 4 gigs of memory, the prices are really good

edit: i see now, it's the manufacturer
BFG is more reliable, XFX in my opinion is not as good as a reputable manuf

edit- also, BFG also is known for Oc'ing their cards out of the box

the reviews on the egg site were kinda cold fish.........i might add it for filler if i am below budget.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor $279........right now, this looks like the processor that i would get today. there are several variations that are basically klingon to me......i suppose that the extremes might drop in price a little, but at around $900, i can't see a major drop when that perynyn comes out.
