Thanks

For free programs, either Avast or AVG free work great.

I also use Lavasoft's adaware SE for spyware removal, it's free also.

For a free firewall program, Zonealarm works well.

Norton works, but it's expensive and it can take over your system. Also, after a year you have to start paying again to get the virus definitions. It's ridiculously expensive for what it is.

Big corporations sometimes have freebies for employees:

See if the company you work for has a policy. Mine provides free Corporate Version of Symantec Anti-Virus. The updates are very frequent (every couple of days) and the subscription is lifetime - FREE

They also allow you to purchase Microsoft Office 2007 (with publisher and several others) for $19.99 Its single user to be used only on your home pc.

I'm self employed, and my boss is cheap. He won't buy me anything...

In my opinion "Anti-Vir" is the best freeby out there. Has mail, resident protection, automatic updates, basically the works....plus the scanning feature/program is appropriately called "Luke Filewalker"! In official tests, Anti-Vir beats most other freebies out there.

AVG and AVAST are good choices too, check this out: http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivi...a/freeav_2.htm

Anyways best thing to do is just "GooGle top ten free anti-virus programs, read and decide for yourself. The fun part is always the deciding and choosing part...I would do the same for anti-spyware and firewalls.

My weapons of choice are:

Anti Virus:

Anti-Vir - http://www.free-av.com/

Firewall:

Zone Alarm free - http://www.zonealarm.com/store/catal...ku_list_za.jsp

Anti-spyware:

Spyware Doctor - starter edition(This one is free!) - http://www.majorgeeks.com/Spyware_Do...ion_d5790.html

Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Privacy:

CCleaner(Cleans your history, internet tracks, hard drive and registry optimizer! Great Tool!" - http://www.ccleaner.com/download

The best part is that all the above are free!!!

I work at a major ISP in the TS department and I'll tell you what, Anti-Vir is #1 recommendation for us, ZoneAlarm is too restrictive plus has huge memory leaks, Macfee and Norton are an absolute NO!, AVG is also a huge memory hog, spybot search and destroy and AdAware 2007 is a must.

adaware 2007 won't run right on my m9700. Updates won't work.

Yeah, the update machine is buggy but you still have the option of downloading separate update patches.

i downloaded the free versions of anti-vir and adaware 2007, but they seem pretty limited. Is it worth buying the Pro versions?
I would say yes to spending a few bucks for the 'Pro' versions running under XP.

Similar to Hammerhead I've been running Grisoft's AVG (can't speak to Anti-Vir) and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware apps for some time. Just upgraded a few months ago to Ad-Aware 2007 Plus from the older Pro version. Does seem a tad buggy vs. their old rock solid platforms, but it still does the job well.

AVG 7.5 Pro is rock solid as alwaze.

The thing I like about the pro versions of adaware is called ad-watch. It's a real time spyware scanner and removal system that stops spyware before it gets installed. With the regular free version, you have to run a scan to remove spyware.

Most pay anti-virus programs run in the background all the time, and monitor the system. Most free programs only run when you run a scan.

isnt spybot search and destroy the same as ad-aware?

edit: so....ad-aware detected spybot as spyware. Is that normal?

No to both questions. I ran Spybot S&D for a few years with Ad-Aware and they alwaze played friendly with each other. Uninstalled Spybot S&D just a coupla months ago, I'd had it with the infrequent updates.

Not that it matters about quality of the app or frequency of updates, but I did donate moneys to the Spybot S&D cause every few months, just felt it was the rite thing to do.

I too have been using AVG for years and I have not had any problems.
Thanks to all for the links to other products.
I like to use other programs from time to time as a double check.

I use Trend Micro's online scanner from time to time:

Avast seems pretty good so far. Are there any known downsides to it?
