I use avast on my desktop, and AVG on my Area-51 m5500. Avast is very good at detecting problems however, it bogs my desktop down. Thanks for reminding me, I need to log into my Windows partition to get all of the updates for the last couple of weeks. (working out of my Ubuntu partition )

I have not run into any issues, much less any performance issues.
Which is why I like it! Its almost not noticeable when not needed, and when called into action does a marvelous job! (Unlike say Norton where it is a weekend project just to be able to share a printer over a home network ugh)

I use AVG and it is great, automatic updates are always works. No problems.

For Spyware and adware, Spybot S&D rocks!!

I'm a AVG / Spybot S&D user.

I use Firefox so adadware and spybot are rather pointless

Well that and Ive curtailed my visits to the types of sites that usually contain that kinda junk over the years, but from a fresh install and 3 months usage both adaware and spybot struggle to find stuff......

I like AVG because it does not appear to use much of the system resources.
When running HL2, I did find an entry on Valve's website that AVG can interfere with HL2, though.
