I thought I'd bring this back up with my recent experiences.. (and another rant..sorry--normally I'm sooooo nice!)
I bought the D-Link DIR-655 router, and while it was a little bit faster, it still was un-acceptably slow.
So, I called D-Link's tech support, and spoke with a basic tech-support person who managed to completely not listen to me--*four* times while I told him what my problem was. Finally I got it through his skull that I was having just *throughput* issues, and he's like "oh, we don't support that kind of troubleshooting--you have to go with our premier support" and I was said "didn't they say I have to pay for that?" and he's like "No, they give you complimentary support for a year" and he pretty much hung up on me.
So I phoned the premier support people, and aside from them definitely charging you no matter what, the guy was a f#$king nutcase--he *again* refused to understand what I was talking about (I'm simply talking about transferring files over the router's wireless connection) and he kept using buzzwords to make up excuses for what he thought my problem was, and he kept routinely saying that it was my ISP's fault that D-Link's wireless connection was slow, and that I should get what he "has"--a "utopia" connection that has 1 terabit per second and costs $249 a month!!! ZOMG!!!! what complete moron! He left me speechless.
So, in what will be my only experience with D-Link's support and Pay support, they are peopled by morons who don't listen to what you're actually saying, and make up excuses and use buzz words rather than try to solve your problems.
Also, I noted that the web interface on the D-Link was nearly identical to the Trendnet's..
So, in desperation I went to the Apple Store and bought one of their Draft-N Airport Extreme wireless access point / router thingies, and while it's not as fast as I wish, it's still much much much faster than the other two..
(I get around 10MB/s when I'm really close to the router, and around 6MB/s elsewhere in the house, so it's better enough that I feel like I'm not totally wasting my money.)
(oh, and to follow up with Trendnet's Rebate saga, every single time I've called TrendNet's rebate center to follow up on my rebate not being received, they have a "Computer Error", or they have to "transfer me" (I get disconnected) or something else that ensures they don't have to talk to me to figure out why they aren't fulfilling their rebate obligations!!)
Thanks again for letting me rant!
