Hey Guys, Just joined this forum tonight. Boy am I glad I found this forum.
I have been having problems with my Gen 2 XPS laptop video. it started locking up hard with blue lines running parallel across the screen sort of like squiggly tire track when I was running graphically intense programs that I have been running for the last two years without incident. (Programs included WoW and TF2)
Well the Video card finally overheated beyond help. even starting with the FN diag displayed intense video errors with random characters on the screen. Then it just fried and blue screened at start up of the bios.
So I wind up ordering the replacement Video Card from their parts and service (cough rape.... $395.00) for the Go 6800 Ultra, which pisses me off after reading this forum, because DELL support told me the only video card that would work in my box is that one. I was looking to upgrade at the same time I was paying to replace this one. So as most of you must know the card they send me is a refurb. and now Im getting a white screen in the middle of playing Team Fortress 2 with the video settings actually quite low. (800x600; bilinear instead of the 4x; all textures set to medium or low...)
The first white screen episode today it immeadiately rebooted the PC as if nothing happened. So I restart the game and play about 30 minutes more and it did it again. However, this time it would not restart. I had to hold the power on button to power the laptop down.
I am guessing I got a bad card...
HERE are my questions before I just have them send me another GO 6800 Ultra ...
1. Does the Go 7800 Ultra Actually fit this XPS GEN2 from Feb 2006? Their parts sales / support didnt even mention it to me when I asked if I could get a better card for this rig.
2. Could this NEW white screen problem be from other component damage caused by the original vid card overheating? Or do you think its just a bad replacement Vid card and I should just get it replaced while I can?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
After following the links from Ghost_recon above, I see that this is compatable... SO anyone familiar with this install? Is the GTX 7800 the same as the Go 7800 Ultra http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...chassisid=8446
? Will the heat sinks etc all line up?
I'm spending my company's money on this as they screwed me over with this laptop to begin with by buyig it refurbished and never told me.
