P200-123 has several issues

Thread Starter
I bought this laptop 2 weeks ago and have had nothing but problems with it, namely :

Its extremely slow (vista home premium). My old PC was an Athlon 1.4 and was much much faster.

It doesnt 'remember' settings - ie cant find external keyboard or mouse on occasions (usb)

Sometimes it wont open applications unless the system is rebooted - ie Itunes

I've had 5 BSOD

The events viewer reads like a who's who of windows warnings or errors

It regularly 'Hangs' when shutting down - upward of 5 minutes? (which I have to do regularly to get applications to work) We all know how long it takes Vista to boot and shut down!

All updates have been applied both vista and toshiba's

I have Kaspersky loaded - scans reveal nothing

Ad-aware loaded - no spyware

Just 'normal programmes loaded - adobe lightroom/CS3, office etc.

If I am having these problems after 2 weeks, what will it be like in several months?

Please let me know your thoughts before Monday as that is the deadline for a refund.

Are there any laptops out there which are trouble free?

Thanks in advance

I've had 3 totally different Vista premium laptops so I can tell you what I've found common between them. They were a Dell 1505, an Acer Aspire 5520-5716, and now a Toshiba x205-sli1. I sold the Acer, I still have the Dell but plan to sell it, and I've had the Toshiba for about a month.

I agree it is slower than XP, many things like simple file renames & transfers that used to be quick and painless now take a few seconds. The constant security warnings (yes I know you can disable them) and errors like "this program had a problem" even though it started, ran and shutdown fine as far as I can tell, are very annoying and make running programs a pain. I've seen errors when trying to move or delete files/folders, like "this file cannot be moved/deleted because it's in use, when there is no reason the file/folder should be in use. A reboot always seems to fix it so I can complete the task at hand.

I have seen the not finding a USB mouse or keyboard error, very annoying. Usually trying another port seems to make it work again.

I've never had a BSOD that I can remember, but plenty of times where the machine would just lock up. I would wait 5, 10, 15 mins or more but it was just completely locked up. XP was very stable for me, but Vista is still very unpredictable as it's still a young OS.

I have seen the hanging during shutdown on all thee machines, especially when trying to hibernate. In XP that's about all I used anymore, hibernate worked so well that I didn't shutdown that often, with Vista i have found it quicker and more reliable to shutdown and boot up each time, but it takes f o r e v e r.

I have done quite a bit of playing and tweaking with services, and programs running in the background, and it is a little better now, but this is about as good as I expect it to get. I couldn't find any XP drivers, or 64 bit for that matter(I was wanting to play around with Vista 64) so I am just living wth Vista and all of it's poblems for now.

It's funny because some people say it's the fastest best OS they have ever used (like my software development instructor) and others say it sucks. I am nearer to the "sucks" opinion that the other side. I figure it has to get better cause it can't get much worse!

The Toshiba has been the best of the three, but that may be because it is clearly the best hardware of the three.

It games well in Vista, Obivion/FEAR/Stalker are a little better than my old Dell XPS 1710. No doubt it would do even better in XP.
