I have a XPS 1710. This version of Media direct 3.3 is for XPS 1330. I don't think it will work on a 1710. I tried a Media direct 3.3 for a 1520 I had at the house and it said it wasn't for the 1710 when I tried to install it. Any way to make this generic and allow it to load on any Dell computer? There are two folders listed and they are associated with the 1330. Does anybody know of a way to edit this for other Dell models?

Original CD is applied for DELL XPS M1330. However, you can modify it to use with other DELL Multimedia Laptop such as Inspiron as follows:
1. Boot your PC using this CD.
2. Following to instruction to partition your HDD.
3. Install OS (XP/Vista) and drivers such as chipset, VGA, sound etc.
4. Insert the CD in, following the instruction if you have XPS M1330. Case else, do it the other ways:
4.1. Copy all the CD content (folder and files) to your HDD Root (C:\ or D:\)
4.2. Idendify your SystemID by going to DELL Laptop BIOS System/System InfoYou will see your system as MM061 for Inspiron E6400/1505, Inspiron 1420, MPX061 for XPS M1210, etc.
4.3. Change the name of following files and folder (my SystemID is "Inspiron 1420"):
+ Folder "XPS M1330" ==> "Your SystemID" (my case is "Inspiron 1420")
+ in the above folder, change file name "XPS M13301.exe" ==> "Inspiron 14201.exe", and "XPS M13302.exe" ==> "Inspiron 14202.exe"
+ Enter folder Lang and change all its language UI sub-folder as follows: "XPS M1330eng" ==> "Your SystemIDeng" and so on for frn, ger, etc. (my case is "Inspiron 1420eng")
+ Open file "Platform.ini" in folder DellKit, replace string "1 = XPS M1330" in section [SystemID] with "1 = Your SystemID" (my case is "1 = Inspiron 1420")
4.4. Run file DellKit.exe to install MD3 to your Hiden Partition and Windows System.

You can extract the boot section of this CD and create your own MD3 Installation CD with UltraISO.

Good luck

so, hi, i recently used this installation instruction above...

have an xps 1710 and istalled (not as perfect) Dell Media Direct, during the installation process I got 2 errors; the files XPS M17101 and XPS M17102 which are located at C:\"your notebook modell" , my is MXG### ) were missing...

so, they are their, but maybee in the false directory??

Before I got this 2 errors, I run DellKit.exe!

PS: Dell Media Direct is installed now, but no sound and I only can start it when I go to START and then to the Shortcut, If i press the Media Direct Button on my notebook it says: Please install new

I want to make this clear, because I want to sell my Notebook with a CLEAN install of XP and VISTA (what I already did) and I want the same with MEDIA DIRECT!

PLEASE HELP
thanks

Tight work wuhoatu!!! IT WORKS

#$%* dell and there horrible implementation of this technology. Once again good job WUHOATU!! Good thinking of simply renaming all the files and changing the pointer in the ini file. Why would Dell make 100 versions of the DVD when they are all the same software? Obviously they want to make everything proprietary so they can charge an arm and a leg. I didn't bother to call those losers but I wouldnt be suprised if they are asking $59.95 for this DVD. Thanks for the work around! I have attached the torrent for Media Direct 3.5 which is the default version for my Vostro 1500. There are other versions out on the torrents if this is not what you want.

UPDATE: I simply copied the files to the root of the HD as directed in the above mentioned instructions. However this is my sisters laptop so I thought I would give her the ISO. I modified it with a portable copy of Power ISO 4.2 and without loosing anything it shrunk it down to 1.68 GB compared to the original 2.6!!! It shaved off a gig. I would seed it as a torrent but I dont have time for that. I never even post on forums so you ladies and gents should just be glad i gave feedback! P.S: Die Media Direct DIE!!!, jk.

You should be able to request the disks direct from Dell since 3.3 wont work on EVERY NOTEBOOK. They might send you a set of 3.1 disks which ever works better for your machine.

I have an XPS M1710, I just installed a new harddrive and installed windows 7 on it. Before installing windows I created a partition of 50 MB cause I remembered that Media Direct needed 47 MB or something.... well MD is larger now right?

Can I even instal Media Direct AFTER windows at all? So that it works with the button?

Do I have to wipe the HD again? Could I just use partition magic or somethng to make the 50MB drive bigger? Is that possible?
