Gateway 9500 tossed in trash, I picked it up and have questions

OKay, someone decided to toss this notebook in the trash. Well, I picked it up & decided to try and fix it and use it as a spare notebook. Anyway, here are my questions.

Problems I noticed. The hd crashed. The battery doesn't charge. I had a spare 20 GB notebook hd laying around and copy of window xp. So I installed the XP. Installation worked.

Problems: I cannot connect to the internet via the ethernet port. I guess this was a windows me laptop. Since I cannot connect to the internet, do I need to update drivers and how so? This I cannot figure out what to do next. I even tried a USB adaptor that has an ethernet port. I notice this notebook has 1.0 USB ports. Still no bananas since this doesn't work also. I don't think it's the 2.0 usb ethernet adaptor, it just cannot recognize the internet connected wired to the router. Any suggestions? Should I install my local ISP disk that was provided years back? I have other notebooks & I never had to use these disks.

Also, the battery does not charge at all. Do you think it's a faulty battery? I pull the plug and the computer shuts down. They seem to be cheap on Ebay. $12 bucks including shipping. Should I just buy another battery or do you think it's a greater problem?

All and all, I'm excited to get this old notebook running if possible.I am WAY more concerned in getting it connected to the net. Battery would eventually come since it does power on with the ac adaptor. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm new to the forum and have been a lurker for a few months. Enjoy the site!

I have recently done 2 xp installations and it typically lacks the following drivers (microsoft being ever so thoughtful)
- graphics
- sound
- network
- modem

The way i got around it is to get drivers for it (sounds obvious once one thinks of it, no?). The HP I installed i simply copied from someone who had a carbon copy of the machine, the Dell I installed i downloaded drivers from the net. If you have access to another pc, search for the drivers on the net and transfer them via USB or CD. check the gateway website.

Batteries on old pcs are often dead or have tiny charge capacities. Replacing the battery will often work, but check the AC adaptor is not faulty. if the AC unit doesn't generate enough power it won't be able to charge the battery. The easy way to check which is which is to see if Windows picks up the battery. It's Likely you will need to buy a new battery.

If you're of an adventurous mind, you could maybe try a lightweight linux distribution to boost performance if the pc is very old. linux picks up network cards pretty easily (there are some issues with obscure wireless cards).

Finally, get the motherboard checked for cracks and loose connections if you can for good measure.

Those are my thoughts.

PS/ If you find a second laptop in the trash, would you mind sending it to me?
