ok, so i upgraded from xp to vista over the weekend. i'm now typing this back on xp. boy i tried as hard as i could to make it work, but i just couldnt break down and use it. i had so many problems with it from drivers, to programs, it was horrible. thanks to all that helped with my previous questions regarding my upgrade. i'll just have to continue to use xp until it dies, or is just no longer supported at all.

by SP2 it'll be fine, and even SP1 although not helping performance is supposed to open more compatibility

lol i agree! however i am using window blinds to get the "aero" look. i really dig that part. not to mention my running processes went from 48 now to average of around 69-72 then. i've got 2 gigs of ram, and was using almost an entire gig just sitting idle. it also seemed as though my hard drive never stopped working. i could hear it rumbling around inside, and the hard drive light wouldnt stop.

i haven't had any real probems with Vista x64 SP1 (RC) on my new Shuttle, though I turned off UAC almost immediately. God that would have annoyed the hell out of me if I had to click yes I do want to perform the action I JUST requested EVERY time I clicked anything. lol

I think the Aero glass interface is pretty slick and I'm running some very nice Sidebar gadgets including in-depth weather current, forecast and radar imagery from the Weather Channel, a RealVNC connector and EVEREST Ultimate's hardware monitoring showing the temps, fan speeds, memory and CPU speeds, timings, voltages, etc.

Looking forward to DX10 goodness in Bioshock, Company of Heroes, Crysis, etc.

I'm running XP Pro (SP3 RC), Media centre, Vista Ultimate SP1 RC and Linux Mint (dual boot) - and while I can understand the issues surrounding Vista etc it does run fine for me. The SP1 upgrade has not really done a hell of a lot - but also I don't recommend running an upgrade from within XP. The only way to get it working correctly IMO is a clean install.

XP will be around for a long time - most business are currently not supporting it - the extra hardware requirements add to the hardware costs so for work we are just down grading to XP. Running 1gig ram dual core CPU and XP runs fine and dandy - vista is noticeably slower particularly if the CPU is below 2gig. None of these laptops have graphics cards so aero is a moot point.

However we will sooner or later be forced onto Vista once the issues are resolved, it's not really that bad just different - on a side note we are now investigating running versions of linux as a way of controlling the cost but it's not quite there yet - just to anal on the whole open source issue. For a basic user they won't know what to do when they go to play a DVD and it says they need to download the drivers etc. If someone could just come out with a fully spec'ed version with all the extras up and running (Hence the Linux mint OS) then we might just have a more serious look.

DX10 doesn't look all that great to me.

8800 wize.

lovin Vista X64, everything works no compatability problems and performance is on par to XP.
you gotta do your research before you load it up.
Have all the drivers you need on disk before install, once installed use the latest drivers from Laptopvideo2go.com and of course, and very important, get the nvidia hotfixes from nvidia.comwhich solve all the video problems.
SP1 for vista is looking good too.
yes kill UAC as soon as you can hehe

yeah UAC is hell on OS. My god I thought it was a mandatory option for a whole day and that day was pure torture.

i'm sure i'll play with it at some point again. i'm just very ocd with my laptop (mainly from reading these forums! lol). the final straw so to speak was when i tried to use acronis 11 to do a backup and the program would not run properly. i live by my backups! if it wasnt for those i'd be screwed now for sure!

i didn't like it either. just couldn't get used to it. it seemed to work fine except the wireless network. i put all my machines back within a matter of days, but i still reinstall vista sometimes because i think i will like it, but i always dump it fast

You, stop drinking the Vista DRM kool-aid.

Read this article

The problems that many people are having with Vista aren't Microsoft's fault...especially with drivers. Aparrently the company that built your device either wants you to buy their newest version since writing a driver for the old one would cost too much....or your device manufacturer is out of business. Now if the company that made your peripheral is out of business and you have no Vista drivers....why is it Microsoft's fault?

The same crap you all are complaining about is the same crap others complained about when XP came out. "XP sux0rz I'mma stick with Win2k which is more l337 than their DRM crap XP!!!!1111oneoneone"
yep, think we all really knew that. Just more entertaining to blame the same old thing every time. History repeats itself...durrrrr
