what are the models of blu-ray drives that dell gives with M1710 or M1730
i would like to buy one for my m1710 but i cant find any

UJ 220 is the best one. Depending on how much you're willing to spend I'd be willing to give up my Drive and my Blu Ray Collection. THinking about moving to a M1730 but I still like my 1710 at the same time. :/

But anyways I'd be sure to get a UJ 220. The UJ 210's burn to slow. If you're backing up data the 220's do a Marvelous job on backing up 25 to 50 gig's worth of data within anywhere from 25-45 mins depending on how much you're burning.

I guess you could go with this, won't write but reads Blu, and it's a few hundred cheaper. But again no point in getting BLU on a PC IMO if you're not writing.

bob - getting stuff like that shipped worldwide can be complicated. someone might be willing to be your proxy to get this product to you: you pay them, they buy it, and then they ship it to you.

I dealt with a Taiwanese seller on eBay that will ship anywhere (I got a 210). I had my drive in about 5 working days, Taiwan->Canada. I can't get things from the US that fast. I didn't get gouged on shipping either.

floyyedtww is seller's eBay ID.

I thought that a 7950gtx card was required to output HD signals to an external monitor? Does that only affect signals from your laptop via DVI to HDMI or DVI to DVI cable to your HD tv?

Also, if anyone knows....since the Quadro fX 3500 card is essentially a 7950 gtx, would a fx 3500 card be HDCP compliant, too?

I'm considering picking up a UJ-220 BD-Rom drive from eBay for my m1710, but wanted to know if I *had* to get a 7950gtx.

darkloki - question about the UJ220 drive... Can you upgrade the firmware of that drive to Blu-Ray Profile 1.1 standards? Or is it stuck at 1.0?

Some users are running AnyDVD HD which allows you to run HDDVD and BD without having HDCP compliant graphics card.

....so if I had the Xbox 360 HD add-on, connected it to my laptop via USB, and used AnyDVD....I would be able to get HD quality playback on on my e1705 / 7900GS? .....interesting...very, very interesting.

Dude, you rock!

I can confirm that the XBOX360 HD drive works fine with AnyDVD and Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra with my config (multi-monitor)... I do not know about the 1705/7900GS config. I would assume it should work without a problem.
Let me know if you are interested in Nero Showtime w/HD plugin and I can test the XBOX 360 HD Drive with that as well.

How does Nero Showtime with the HD plugin compare with Nero 8 Ultra Edition?

Does Nero Showtime (or Nero Ultra edition) allow 1080p output without having to go through HDCP compliant graphic cards?

Nero Showtime is included with Nero 8 Ultra Edition but you do have to purchase the HD plugin separately.
You would still need AnyDVD HD to allow viewing using a non-HDCP card.
I believe you can download a trial of the AnyDVD before purchasing... give it a try...

So I got really lucky on eBay and got a UJ-220 drive (with firmware 1.0) AND a 7950GTX. The local CompUSA was going out of business near my house, so I was able to get Nero 8 Ultra Edition really cheaply, so the $29.99 for the HD/BD plug-in wasn't too bad of an extra cost.

I can play BD movies (like the Guardian), but can't seem to play Spider-man 3. I downloaded the last 7950GTX dell drivers and updated my Nero software, but I still can't seem to play Spider-man 3.

There doesn't seem to be any firmware updates for the UJ-220 drive, either.

Am I just out of luck because I can't update the firmware?

I'll try that AnyDVD HD player (as a free trial), but am just curious if it's a program issue or a firmware issue.

Thanks

My M1730 came with BR reader only - Ma s h i t a UJ 110.

Fact is I don't even use it, and can't use it if I install any drivers other than the offical ones.

I used AnyDVD HD on Resident Evil Extinction and Spiderman 3, and have had no luck getting those Bluray discs to play.

I just want to find a program that will allow me to play Profile 1.1 Bluray discs.

Any suggestions?

I'm able to play Spiderman 3 on my XP partition but not my Vista partition.
