WUXGA 15.4" laptop

I'm having a very hard time finding an 15.4" laptop with a WUXGA 1920x1200 lcd screen. I currently have an Dell Inspiron 6000 with an nvidia card and a WUXGA screen. I paid about 1100 euros for that laptop two years ago (about $1300 in 2005 dollars). However, apparently Dell doesn't sell 15.4" laptops anymore at that resolution?

Anyone have any suggestions or knows a list of WUXGA laptops? Preferably the laptop should also have an Nvidia graphics card (since ATI drivers are sometimes problematic in linux).

Dell still makes WUXGA an option on the Latitude D830 and Precision M4300,the only other one I know of is the Alienware M5550....which I think, has been discontinued.
All three have nvidia.

Prepare to be lonely if you choose a WUXGA. I've had one since June 2005, and I'm hooked on the high resolution. Conventional screens look bitty, grainy.

However, on the default screen the fonts are so small that most people will need to enlarge them in the system fonts display section. The display is a yummy 148dpi, so you'll need to enlarge 154% to ensure an inch actually is an inch onscreen.

All well and good, except for web browsing. Most websites (including this one!) don't bother to support the enlarged screen fonts, and the upshot is either tiny fonts, or enlarged fonts that don't fit into windows, and generally a screwed display.

Be prepared for a lot of frustation, and being way out of the mainstream.

And only IE7 supports these enlarged fonts. Firefox and Safari PC dont'. Enlarging the browser fonts (Ctrl-+) isn't the answer - they still get out of kilter. So if you want the enlarged fonts you need IE7.

But if web programmers don't support WUXGA screens properly, we'll never reach the paperless nirvana.

Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately Dell doesn't sell Latitude's with that screen resolution on their European sites . The Precision is available, so thanks for that tip! But apparently it has an Quadro FX 360M gfx card, which performs pretty badly from what I read. They still sell the alienware M5550 here in Europe, so that is still an option. But it seems rather overpriced to me to be honest, especially for a product that is at the end of its life-cycle apparently and has already been discontinued in the states.

Perhaps I have to downgrade to a 1650x1050 screen or consider a 17". Amazing that my choices on this matter have actually degraded over the last two years .

I agree! Keep in mind that I've been using a WUXGA screen for several years now, so I know what to expect. Personally I can live with the small fonts. I use Linux Ubuntu nowadays and it has a very nice zoom feature comes in very handy! I have used a 1650x1050 as well for a while, but I found it to be too cramped for applications like Adobe Flash Pro and Eclipse, a Java development environment.

I think IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T61p can be had with 15.4" WUXGA but I can't find how/where I managed to customize it this way, sorry.

The alienware m5550 had a 1920x1200 resolution, but no Glossy screen.

Thanks a lot for all the replies people, I really appreciate it!

It looks like the IBM Thinkpad T61p or the Aienware M5500 are the only two realistic options. I'm leaning towards the thinkpad, simply because at first glance it looks more affordable. I'm still researching though how good the NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M actually is and if it is supported on linux.

Merry Christmas!

They still sell it on their European sites though, like alienware.co.uk and alienware.de. Though, I'm a bit wary about buying a product which has been discontinued.

should be okay as long as there is Alienware warranty provided.

I am thinking of Sony being my next laptop or Apple. Neither one their 15.4" or 14.1" doesn't have anything larger than 1280x800

Nothing better than the T61p mobile workstation.

I highly recommend against 1920 x 1200 LCD for 15.4" screen.

My Z71v originally came with 1650 x 1080, i replaced the LCD for a higer res...

damn while the screen look tight and nice....my eyes hurt from it being so DAMN small!!!

I highly recommend 1920x1200 for a 15.4" screen. You can always make the fonts larger but you can never get more pixels later if you buy a low-res screen today.

The SXGA+ 12.1" screen on the Fujitsu T4220 has the same pixel density and looks AMAZING!
