I got a 4GB (2x2GB) OCZ DDR2 800Mhz upgrade coming tomorrow! Cheap!

Yep, fortunately I found a nice deal over Dell.com for this memory - yes, I know it's crazy but that was the cheapest place I found, they offered 15% off + FREE Next Business Day @ DHL, which sounds pretty good for me.

I'm going from 2x1GB DDR2 533Mhz to a 2x2GB OCZ DDR2 800Mhz@667Mhz with lifetime warranty for as low as $44 each module. I think will be great upgrade since my 2GB always wasn't enough!

If you want to take a look, go ahead at http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...9&sku=A1311935 .

I don't know if that'll work on your setup, I mean it may work, but I dont think it'll clock at 800.
It will indeed work, but it also will clock down to 667mhz
post #4 of 33
Which is cool, because then it will run @ CL4 instead of CL5 like most DDR2-667MHz modules.

are you sure about this ??
I don't think it works that way...I'm pretty sure only the only change is 800-667 rather than the timings changing with it.

Both frequency and timings will change. Look at CPU-Z and you will see the corresponding timings to frequencies.

yep its true, I've seen it myself.

ahh apologies for being wrong

and if it will work in CL4 is it big improvement over CL5
wil it be noticeable ?

I don't think so, most things don't feel too much difference when it comes to ram changes as long as they aren't super significant.

CAS latency usually makes a decent improvement for system RAM. It may not be a 'seat of your pants' improvement, but it will be there. It can speed up encoding processes and such a bit.

If you were to be upgrading from 2GB of 667 to 2GB of 800 just for the CAS latency improvement, it wouldn't be worth it. Since you are getting more RAM out of the deal, its definitely worth it - especially considering the price for 800Mhz chips is the same as for the 667's.

Yea, I think you got a good deal out of this overall.
Plus as it comes from dell, you have that in warranty with the rest of your notebook.
I just wish they would ship/sell these in Japan as I STILL can't find a good price for 2gb so-dimms.

Exactly, with the price of RAM at an all time low, I am simply waiting for an extra hundred bucks to come around so I can buy up 4GB for my system.
Actually you can find 4GB kits of DDR2-667 for $60-70 after rebates.
I know. I prefer a brand that has a good reputation... which OCZ does. Besides that, buying from Dell and having the RAM under my system warranty makes a huge difference for me.

*yes, its only about 80 bux through Dell.. I used 100 bux as a generalization*
post #17 of 33
Well I was referring to the OCZ here, and its in stock. http://shop2.outpost.com/%7B-ZUbJEf2...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Ahh gotcha (I tend to forget about checking Frys). For me though, paying the extra 20 bux and having Dell cover them for the last year and a half of my warranty is worth it. Especially since I have NBD service.

If I were out of warranty though, I would be all over that like flies on *insert smelly object of choice*.

OCZ Memory carries a lifetime warranty - even after your Dell warranty expires.

Timings will indeed drop to CL4 - and a great buy on these sticks!

Would this memory work in an Inspiron 1720? It looks to me like it would, just always feel better with a second opion.
