Generalized self-build question

So my question is basically, if you run into a problem with your system and you figure out what the problem is...I assume most people would RMA the part and get a replacement from the company. However, after taking a look around at [H] they seem to just buy new parts and replace them themselves. What in that case do they do with the malfunctioning parts? Or do they RMA them and then sell off the new replaced part on ebay or the forum or w/e?

I'd just like to know before I build my own

usually a company will request you shipping the part first before they ship the new part if you are returning it or claiming it is defective. other companies will ask for it within 15 days of receiving the new part.
