Received my 1720 about two weeks ago and am very unhappy with it.
Some of the reasons I'm unhappy with the notebook:
1. When closed there is about 1-2mm of play between the screen and laptop, very easy to move up and down when it should be locked.
2. Extended life battery fits into the case very loose. It can easily be moved up and down and back and forth.
3. Touch pad hesitates all the time, and will then refuse to move for fraction of a second.
4. Case creaks while typing.
5. Down arrow key has a very loud squeak.
6. Performance in Vista Ultimate seems horrible.
7. Touch pad buttons are extremely unresponsive, require a very hard click to respond.
These are all enough reasons for me to return the notebook.
Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2, 3 GB RAM, Geforce 8600M 256MB, 1920x1200, DVD DL Burner 8x, 320 GB Hard Drive, etc...
I ordered an Alienware M9750 as a replacement with: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16, 4GB RAM, Geforce 8700 512MB, 1920x1200, DVD DL Burner, RAID 0 160GB x 2, etc...
Hopefully it's much better than the 1720... I hope Dell hasn't rubbed off too much on them
