M1710 SYSTEM_ERROR, Require Service L2 Cache

Ok... might sound a bit obvious but for a number of months now my screen has been "glitching" scrambling for a second then might be ok for a hour or so... no biggie. Anyway I rang XPS support today and ran the diag disc and the memory test came up with this: SYSTEM_ERROR, Require Service SERVICE_GET_L2_CACHE_SIZE not found.... This test was done under the Data bus Stress test... I have pulled the mem modules but still getting the error.. Have run the CPU test all came up ok... Still under warranty but would appreciate ideas... yes, yes have done the usual google searches... TIA

Sounds odd to me, can't get the L2 Cache Size from the CPU? Sounds like a CPU malfunction, and you should be able to get a new CPU from this.

Yes very odd... I have pulled both sticks of mem (I have 2Gb... 2x 1gig sticks) and get the same error. I can only imagine it is the CPU. Computer runs normally but I have found from time time to time it will reboot or crash... Noticed it more since Vista, but just thought it was a Vista bug... Seems hardware based now.

Check your CPU settings in the BIOS, see if there is any mention of L2 cache.
if the L2 is damaged, does the CPU still work? techies?
Yea. At least with older computers, I believe you could even disable the L2 (but why would you ever want to?)

Well no settings in the BIOS for L2 but the computer works fine... in fact apart from the screen "glitch" every now and again its fine. I have phoned Dell XPS and under warranty they want to replace the main board. Still would like to know if that really is the problem..

See if you can get a faster CPU upgrade while you're at it. Sometimes the tech people will throw in a free upgrade, but don't be pissed or upset if they don't.

Currently have a T7400 installed Core 2 Duo... funny though as Vista reports it as a 2.16Mhz and 2.17Mhz..... ?? Any ideas?

why would anybody ever have the turbo button off anyway?

edit: found why! http://www.pcguide.com/ref/case/switchTurbo-c.html

I remember this being specifically true of the sierra *** quest games (such as police, kings, space... roger wilco the space janitor!!)

Ive actually heard of this issue before after about 2 weeks (non notebook btw) turns out the motherboard was the culprit doesnt hurt to ask to have both replaced to save you 2 headaches instead of just one.
