Newer models with 8xxx series gpu's

Thread Starter
Anyone know if HP's newer model laptops with 8xxx series (e.g. 8600gs) gpu's are gpu upgrade friendly, like say, a Dell. Have searched a lot and to no avail for an answer except one "supposedly" ex-HP employee saying it is quite possible, but HP doesn't advertise it and doesn't have removal procedures in their manuals. My wife just got a dv9640us and I would like to put at least a 8700gt in it for when I use it to play games. It's actually not a bad machine, just lacking a little in the graphics department.

Thanks much in advance for any help.

under vista, this model can support up to 1gigo gpu memory (card and system ram combined) which is pretty good. Finding the right driver and clean the system at game playing time (and a fast hard drive) will probably be better than just a gpu upgrade.

saying that, true that HP does not advertise the upgradability of gpus in its laptops and it is up to user groups or personal to find out on their own and share the experience. It a hit and miss on the models. U might be the 1st to open the box and see :-)

cheers ...

I do not know of any "gpu upgrade frinedly" notebooks. While it may not be "impossible" to do, there are no user-friendly gpu upgrades. At best, you would have to invalidate the warranty.

I believe that the only Dell gpu "upgrade" is that which you can do when you order your notebook in the first place. There are no retail "Laptop Video Cards", much though I wish that there were!

There do exist such ones - but not too many. For instance Amilo x43x series (Uniwill chassis) do accept go6800, go7600, (did also go7900GS with unreliable results), mobile X1800 and X1900 - but small filing might been needed and problems with fan control also. Of course the form factor of the cards must be the same (Arima Special). Same cards may also work on Alienware 5700. But more an exception than a rule, regrettably.

Yep, for some fairly specialized notebooks (read expensive!) that can be the case, but on a mainstream HP? Nah, I hate to say it, but what you've got, you've got...like I said, I don't think that you will even find Dell "user-upgradable" insofar as GPUs are concerned.

I do love notebooks, but it was a learning experience that "upgrade paths" are very, very limited compared to the desktop world. We pay a big price to get that small form factor...

The reason i asked...and thanks for responses BTW... is the Dell Inspiron and XPS line were upgradeable to an extent

Yep, I do stand corrected! (same for zipperi) Not a lot of gpu-upgradables out there, but there are a few...

"My Bad"!
