It depends on what you intend on doing. If you're just gaming and not overclocking any of the reference boards (EVGA 780i A1 or XFX 780i SLI) would work fine.

Non-reference boards, such as the ASUS Striker II Formula and EVGA FTW (EVGA's own board, not the reference board made by FoxConn), usually do a better job at overclocking due to the use of higher quality components.

If you're looking for a real overclocker and are not interested in SLI, then steer clear of the 780i chipset.

I was going with the 780i chipped board early on, but have since changed my mind.

mostly gaming, minimal overclocking if any at all. wanted to put a quad core on it the e6600, thinking about one graphics card and maybe a second later (or maybe both up front hadn't decided) but might have wanted a wireless card in there and a tv card...but that thing doesn't look like it has much room for expansion...what's the reason for that

thats the price you pay for sli or x-fire...fewer pci slots.

there are some boards available w/integrated wireless, if interested.

If you're sure you are not gonna SLI, then I suggest buying a board with an Intel chipset..either X38, or the upcoming P45 or X48.

edit - if want to sli, but only dual sli, you might want to think about a 750i chipped board. will leave a little more room for expansion.

i was thinking about that b4...not sure why i stopped, i'm gonna have to take another look at it

only two pci slots on the 750i http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1...33&modelmenu=1 not much for expansion, i'm feeling like i've forgotten something though what else would i have put in this machine...?

I'm thinking now maybe i don't need the wireless or even the tv card...

the price difference is big between the 750 and 780

You mean the Q6600. Fantastic processor by the way. Due to revision releases you shouldn't have a problem getting one with G0 stepping, which in laymen's terms doesn't seem to run as hot as the previous revisions and overclocks better as well.

i just built that desktop i was talking about earlier it's in my sig: the q6600 g0 stepping/780i with a 9600gt and now i've gotten a sale for it

so now i was going to build another back with two 9800 gtx's as the price has dropped so much, i know the 9900 is supposed to come out soon but at $210 for a 9800gtx that's a good price for that kind of performance.

now i'm wondering though should i go with the wolfsdale this time? i'm getting it for $189 a little cheaper than the quad and the benchmark ranked it higher than the quad though those benchmarks are old (the quad is a great performer though)

and for the mobo i was thinking go back with the same thing an asus p5n-t deluxe. i am getting a driver irql not less than or equal to BSOD but that seemed to be linked to the nvgts driver which i put back to standard pci ide and i've not crashed since http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=149768

i am also considering the evga 790i but i dont overclock that much and i already bought the ddr2

what's your thoughts?
