vostro no sound after switch back to xp from vista

Thread Starter
hi I have a vostro 1400 and close to successfully switched back to xp from vista. I am now just having trouble getting my sound card to work.

After attempting to install driver form Dell sight I get an error...

I have hear that installing Microsoft UAA driver first then dell driver afterward might work...

Have also read that there is different drivers for Microsoft UAA sp1 and sp2...

can anyone help me out...

tnx...

I have the same exact problem only with a vostro 1000 that came with vista and now has xp pro sp3 on it (i'm assuming the sound card is the same). Theres s PCI Device with a question mark in device manager and i'm assuming thats the sound card. The driver from the dell website doesn't work.

mlaya, if you figure it our please let me know the solution. I spent hours and hours searching the web and found close to nothing.

Edit: upon further searching I found that the sound card is made by SigmaTel, i found a bunch of drivers all over the place for it. I installed like 7 different ones but nothing works. Only 2 things changed in the device manager. Instead of PCI Device under the yellow question mark i now have a "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" but that still has a question mark next to it and is says that the drivers for this device are not installed.

The driver support for XP on the new line is VERY shoddy you will need to use the sigmatel drivers from other systems such as the precision M6300 which DOES have winXP support.

Hey gang... don't know if you have found a solution but I finally did and thought I'd share it.

First, download the latest driver from dell and extract it. But before proceeding with the setup, cancel out and browse to the folder where the driver files were extracted.

Make your way into the HDAQFE\win2k_xp\us folder.
Run the file aclled 'kb835221.exe'. This is apparently the aforemention UAA hotfix which I couldn't find anywhere else.
This magically made everything work for me. My "unknown PCI device" suddenly turned into the Sigmatel audio/modem device, and I was able to run the sigmatel setup successfully. Hope it works for you too.
