Updating E1705 Video Card

Thread Starter
Hey,

I have a Dell E1705 laptop with an ATI x1400 video card in it right now. I am looking for the best possible video card that I can update my laptop with in order to get the best gaming performance.
I play such games as:
Counter-Strike Source
Call of Duty 4
World of Warcraft

Regardless of price etc....I want to know what is the limit for updating the Dell E1705

p.s. --> have been considering the 7900 Gt....

As far as I know the highest you can go is the 7900gtx which is definetly nothing to scoff at.

Upgrade to 512MB 7900 GTX (http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=151471)
Upgrade to 7800 GTX (http://www.notebookforums.com/thread142809.html)

Quadro FX 2500 or 3500 are the latest cards that will fit the E1705.

2500 - $225
3500 - $499

Even a 512MB 7950 GTX would work, though performance over a 7900 GTX isn't great at all.

An 8 series card is becoming more and more useful these days. Sure the 7900/7950GTX is a top of the line card, but the 7 series starting to show its age

Yeah, but the only way you're able to upgrade to an 8 series card is if you purchase a new laptop or motherboard. For a relatively cheap upgrade to some not too demanding games, go for a 7900 GS or GTX.

True, get the card that suits what you play

Ive done this exact same thing. I had an X1400 upgraded to a 7950 for about 350 on ebay and BAM, the gaming began and it hasnt stopped since about 8 mo ago :] The 7950/Q. 3500 is the best card you can upgrade to. too bad they dont offer SLI =/

they run basically every game well except for Crysis. The 7950 is a beast.

It is a beast, but the newer stuff takes more kindly to an 8 card

only if its an 8800 which costs a fortune in the mobile form factor.

Not necessarily.

The 8600 from what benchmarks show, is a decent card, certainly not the best, not an 8800, but seems to pack a bit of a punch, again, nothing fancy but still a decent mid range card.

The gateway PFX model sports an 8800GTS for about $1200. Not a bad deal at all.
