With it propped up on this stand with this fan blowing at 75% force underneath (and through) it, I'm getting a 48C idle. With the exact same setup the GPU will still hit into the 90s and 100s on load.

I'm hoping AS5ing the thing will help a bit, because as it stands I don't see the GPU withstanding repeat sustained trips over 100C without lasting damage. I keep checking the Dell Outlet for 1730s and 1710s with T7600Gs and 7950GTXes since I really don't think this is going to stop, and your description doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy. I trust your "figuring" included opening the thing up and AS5ing?

clean it well. but i figure u already knew that. i take it to a shop every 7-8 months. cause the best way is to remove all the parts , heatsink, fans etc. im not comfortable doing that and they do a thorough job.
computer was shutting down after 30 mins of COD4. seems there was a thin film of dust on the heatsinks. after cleaning, all is well.

Yeah I clean out my laptop every 4 or 5 weeks or so. Usually big dust bunnies shoved between the fan and heatsink. Thats why it gets hotter and hotter over time. Pretty easy to open up the laptop, just alittle time consuming.

Yes, you can clean it frequently and you can reapply thermal compound but card degradation was unavoidable with both my 6800 Ultra and 7950GTX. For instance, both cards no longer can max at the same frequencies they used to. This is why I hardly run at max. The 6800 Ultra kept getting hotter while the 7950 GTX stays the same. Some games I don't even run the GPU fan on high and its still cool (7950 that is). If you were still satisfied with your XPS2, I'd advise you to get a M1710 or a M6300 now as they're pretty much the same form factor and pack a punch.
