Convince me to buy a Dell XPS laptop

Hi everybody,

In advance, thanks for your help.

Up till last night, I was set on getting an alienware 51m but for the fun of it...I thought I'd price the Dell XPS. When it was all done the XPS was only a bit more, due to the tax issue. But the XPS had more power, better memory, well lets just say, it makes the Area 51m look like last years hardware. I've read Geeds review and I agree, lets keep the computer that performs better.

So, my questions to you are...1. Has dell figured out what is going on with their lockup problems? 2. Should I just configure an 9100? (i can't remember if that is the right model) 3. How has the support for Dell been since the release of the XPS? 4. Any other information, tidbits, facts, thoughts that you have on why go with dell over the competition would be great.

Also, after speaking with Alienware service, they said their next new model really won't be out until 6 months from now. I'm thinking I might as well buy the best model now available in the $3000 range and then wait and see what the Alien can do and upgrade in 2 years.

Don't know what to do but that is why I'm asking everybody here.

THanks,
Matthew

Good enough

Well, maybe I should just start all over and take a look at the Sager model as well. Jeeze!

I meant buy a Voodoo cause they got the AMD64 one w/ Radeon 9700. Much more useful than an overpriced EE.

Oh but then again, it's also totally overpriced so I mean if your rich, buy it.

If you need convincing to do something, don't do/get/buy it. Because its not worth it. Be absolutely sure of yourself, and what you want to buy, and dont ask other people to convince you.

Thanks to everybody.

I love this forum. Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have started the thread as...convince me to buy. Should've been more...what do you recommend.

At any rate, I'm still on the fence. I was about ready to pull the trigger yesterday but then realized I'd have to wait 4 weeks before I even got the alienware laptop so I thought maybe I'll search and look at the other possibilities and that is when I ran across the dell. So I thought it be interesting to see what people are saying about their lappies.

I'll keep looking and when I feel it's right then I'll go ahead and buy one. I'm still open for recommendations and I'll let you all know what I decide to do.

Thanks,

For once i agree with Microsoft here and consider a sager? Right now if money wasnt an object then a maxed out sager can easily be a better buy than a Dell Equivalent system. You want dell simply due to Brand marketing, Better Warrenty policy, Upgradable graphics besides the the new Sager 8790 is hot and I admit id pick up one over an XPS if i had the choice.

9700 pro?

http://www.go-l.com/laptops/hollywoo...hics/index.htm

They claim to have a Radeon Mobility 9700 Pro is there such a chip released?
Also a image there claim that it has 493 engin clock and 390 memory clock.
How fast is that compared to a ordinary Mobility 9700?

Go-L prolly stands Go-Lick , on par with some of Eurocom's claims.

"Radeon X800 mobile pro w/ 256 pipelines!!! "

Sounds like an overclocked mobility 9700. Different manufacturers clock it at varying speeds.

Just a quick warning about sager.. I have a couple of friend that got it from sager... Things turned out .. not pretty. One had a bad VRam and the others has a total CPU failure, all w/in the first half year. I donno they are just the unlucly too or what. They are pretty much stuck w/ the system after the havoc w/ the Sager representatives. Actually i should tell them about this sites and maybe someobody here will help them.. but so far from what i can tell, if u luck out and get a good sager, start believe in god...

[edit] they bought the system the same time i bought my Alienware..... about 2 yrs ago. They now use compaq and hp.. don't ask...

The XPS will have a substantial graphics upgrade available in 2 months. The XPS is going to be the only notebook that will use this and will seriously play well with Doom 3 and Half Life 2 when both games are released.

Clevo is not going to use this graphics chip, nor will Voodoo or Alienware until PCI-E is out which is 4-6 months away.

If I were you i would definitely give the XPS a try, if you want to play Doom 3 or Half Life 2 at the best speed and image quality, you need to be ready with the right hardware.

Its likely going to be the Geforce 5750 or 9700 Pro 128 -256mb variant

Buy an XPS or Vido over here will make you wish you did. Vido's like a scientist, you see, he likes to experiment and stuff. Mostly he likes to see how far things can bend before they break, things like fingers and arms and legs but also backbones too. So, do yourself a favor, buy the XPS.

(is this working?) (Oh well, I tried, actually, Vido is a really nice guy, he just looks tough but he is very interested in science, like what makes girls happy, he's a lover, not a fighter).

Oh, by the way, ezfeeling, I have a bad feeling about you. The scenario you describe is extremely unlikely unless your "friends" were both dealing with an uncommonly bad, and probably unauthorized, reseller and they didn't take advantage of SAGER's no questions asked 30 day return policy or use any of SAGER's other warranty provisions. I've been dealing with SAGER for 10 years, the very few problems I have had have always been dealt with promptly and to my satisfaction. Then again, I have dealt with reputable authorized dealers and I did use the resources SAGER provides to their fullest. Definitely refer your "friends" to these forums though its highly unlikely that anything could be done about something that happened two years ago.

Skywalker that is a 8790 and you can configure it exactly the same, but $4000 cheaper not even exggerating

As long as the laptop (any laptop) doesn't have a soldered on GPU, then it is upgradeable. That being said, Dell does not have this sole advantage, so your point is moot. And I highly doubt there will be ANY graphics update at all within 2 months for laptops, considering how old the Radeon 9700 is. If there is an update, it will probably just be an overclocked Radeon 9700, that anyone with an overclocking utility could do.
