HP Pavilion dv6000 beep problem

Thread Starter
Good afternoon everyone,

I have quite a problem here that I have never seen before and don't know how to fix.

Recently when starting up my lap top, there was 1 long beeeep, then 2 shot beep. And black screen. The computer works well, I mean it goes on working but screen is black.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Or found solution for it?

On the computer is Mandriva atm, but I don't think its software problem? Or it is?

Help me out as I badly need computer and information inside.

Cheers,
Insomnia

I would contact HP tech support. The beeps represent an error code, but I do not know what those specifically indicate.

A common, safe, do it yourself, thing that you might try though, is to turn the notebook off, remove the ac cord and battery, and carefully, remove, and then re-seat the memory sticks.

Another possible issue, can be that the inverter has failed, killing off the backlight to the screen. If that is the case, you can actually see (very, very dimly!) that your normal "desktop" is running, but that the screen is just dark.

On some desktop computers that means the BIOs cannot detect the video card. Hopefully that is not your problem. I would reseat the laptop memory and go from there.

its a common issue with all the newer hp models like the dv2000, dv6000, and dv9000. i repair multiple of these newer hp's at work daily. i could do it if you are out of warranty. let me know!

I have a dv9000 with the same beep codes. Where is a web page that list these codes? I have seen sites for other codes but not just 2 sets. What does the 1 - 2 code indicate.

1 long and 2 short is probably the correct sequence that you are referring to. I have seen plenty of these boards fail with that issue. It is a video error code. The northbridge needs to be re-flowed properly...

I long beep and 2 short beeps indicate a display adapter problem. Try hooking it up to an external monitor. If you still do not have video the motherboard will need to be replaced. It may be cheaper to replace the motherboard than having it reflowed as [NFO]N0S suggested.

This model may be covered by the bulletin HP Warranty enhancement. The link is http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_UKEN. Be firm even though some of the early levels will deny its existance. This model has definite problems.

Does this mean they will fix the hardware(new motherboard/reflow controler) or just update the bios?

They will replace anything that is not working. they then give a 90 day limited warranty on what they fixed. Typically it will replace the motherboard with a new one. If you could get an email address to me I could send you the completed form.

So I got same dreaded 1 long beep, 2 short beeps on my dv2000t. HP confirmed that this meant a video problem and graciously offered to fix it for 300 bucks. I decided to try reflowing the motherboard myself and if it didn't work I'd just scrap the laptop and get a new one (better than spending $300 to fix this one).

Good news, it worked! And it was surprisingly easy as long as you have the patience to take the laptop apart. Thanks for the reflow suggestion NFO[N0S], you saved me some cash.

For those who don't know, reflowing involves heating your MB for a few minutes using a heat gun. The heat melts the solder and allows it to reform contacts that may have come loose.

Here's a video of a guy doing it on an IBM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR8L3B3eDr0

My only word of caution is be careful and patient taking the laptop apart, i found it very frustrating and ended ripping the power button wires...need to do some soldering to fix it now.

Disassembly instructions: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01035657.pdf

And don't spare any foil to cover the platic pieces on the MB for the reflow, they will melt! Take the platic and paper stickers off the MB before the reflow too.

Good luck!

That has to be one of the most "ghetto" re-heat/re-flow jobs I have ever seen. The component that is bad that needs repairing is not being monitored by any device. The person did not put any flux under the component that needs to be repaired. That person is not using a bottom heater. The person does not mention anything about Baking the board to prevent any damage to the BGA components from the humidity that builds up in them.

Many many errors in this video, but if it works, it worked

beep problem

I know this is way too late for the guy who's asked the original problem but today I got the same problem with a dv6000. One long beep followed by 2 short ones. The problem was a defective memory module. I just removed it and the laptop works perfectly with just 1 Gb of RAM instead of 2 Gb.
Hope it helps others in the future!
Can you tell me how you did it, in words I understand
post #16 of 22
I just physically removed the defective RAM module.

Not every case is a bad memory module. Most cases it is the north bridge
post #18 of 22
I fully agree except this time it was a memory module.

Your Message Box is full. I have sent you an e-mail. I would like to get in touch with you. I do have two V6133CL which need repairs. Thanks

One long beep followed by two short beeps indicate that a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information.

It seems to be a hardware malfunction to me. Please have someone with hardware debugging expertise take a look at your laptop.
