Windows XP

Just a couple questions:
1.) What is the Windows XP OEM Preinstallation kit used for? Some sites sell it for only $5.00.
2.) If you buy the OEM version of windows XP does it just mean that you won't get support from Microsoft?

Thanks

I think rincewind was talking about the OEM version of Windows. The Preinstallation disc is $5.00

The OEM version is only a cd. It can only be sold (legally) if you buy a major hardware upgrade (new Mobo, HD or laptop). Otherwise there is no difference. Cheap way of getting XP if you buy the hardware anyway. Most of the time it´s about 1/3 of the price of a normal XP package.

Preinstall kit I have no idea of.

I found out what the preinstallation disc is used for:

By using the OEM Preinstallation Kit, you can:
Save valuable time by using a configuration set instead of manually answering questions in Windows Setup.
Deliver a ready-to-use, built-to-order system by preinstalling and testing all programs and applications, including updated drivers and patches.
Customize the Windows XP Windows Welcome screen to display your OEM logo and company name.
Include shortcuts to preinstalled applications on the most-frequently-used list of applications on the Windows XP Start menu.
Add a link to OEM-specific information on the Windows XP Start menu.
Include a link to your company's Web site in the Microsoft Internet Explorer Favorites.
Ensure compliance with the terms of the Microsoft Distribution and End-User License Agreement (EULA).

Heh...there is a solution to buy software for even cheaper than OEM prices...the academic editions. All you need is fax your (or someone elses *wink*) student/teacher ID and you are eligible to buy the academic version of software. It should be 30-50% cheaper than the regular versions, and the big software companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and Corel all offer such versions. The academic version of Windows XP Pro upgrade is $99. I usually buy them from needsoftware.com.

That is correct, but if you of look from the legal stuff you could also download a warez version, you break the license agreement in any way. With a student version you have to be a student, and you must not use it in a business enviroment. With OEM you can legally get a cheap version that there is no restrictions on (except for the things mentioned above).
