Assembling Home Audio/Theater System, piece by piece

I recently bought a GoVideo D2730 Networked DVD player, and it obviously doesn't have the speaker hookups/built-in reciever that my GoVideo DH7000 Home Theater unit does. The D2730 is for my dorm.

I want to start building a home theater system that will at least carry me through college. I've got the DVD player, and now I'm considering reciever units.

The best one for the price that I've found is the Sony STRDE995B Surround Receiver. It's on sale at OneCall for $288. It had been $499. So far, all the reviews I've read have said that this is a top notch reciever. I will more than likely purchase it- hopefully Circuit City will price match and I'll be able to get it tomorrow.

However, beyond the DVD player and reciever, I have NO clue what to get or how much I should pay for it. Beyond the $130 for the DVD and $300 for the Reciever, I have about another $70-$120 to spend on speakers. The reciever is a 7.1 capable rig.

the DVD player

I need advice on speakers, basically, or an equivalent reciever at a cheaper price. Many thanks

The budget left over for the speakers don't allow much...if you want to fulfill the 7.1 system, that would give you about $15 to spend on each speaker/subwoofer. Not a good thing to do. I think you have two options: if you already have the receiver, you may want to consider a stereo system instead. But I assume you probably want a multichannel system. If you did not purchase your receiver yet, your best bet would be to go with a HTiB system. The Sony HTiBs aren't the best (they chose aesthetics over performance). A better choice would be Kenwood, Onkyo, or Denon.
