GPU overheat I think

So all, got some artifacting in CoD4 so I checked the temps and right now they seem to may at about 93C (6800Ultra desktop). It seemed hot to me so I ran ATi Tool and ran the artifact scanner and it seems to be at 9000 pixels, which seems bad. Is it?

apparently out of 28 people no one knows

93 is bad IMO. Are you using a stock HSF?

not for the Ultras. Those ran pretty hot.

yeah, stock.

Also, if heat isn't the problem, what would be causing the artifacting?

reseating the card usually fixes this. if it is overheating, reseat it, let it run idle, see if it runs good. if it does great, and if it does back to artifacting, it probably is overheating.

Just realized that the seating can't be the problem, to get it to work (which I can) I just take the side panel off and use a 25cm mini-fan to cool it, and under these conditions it works which would make me think heat has to do with it.

Talking to alienware currently, seem to be doing decently, had me run 3d06 3 times and all 3 i got a measly 2400 (although that seems to be the norm for the Ultra.

Hopefully we get it replaced/upgraded

93 is hot for the desktop ultra 6800. Boss plays BF2 with one everyday everthing maxed out and it never breaks 70C. Record temp was 84C after playing for 6 hours straight. He lives out in Riverside where the ambient temp is 105F +

Ever opened up the case and dusted out the card?

Yeah, problems still persisted.

Just resolved the issue with tech support and they will send out a probably upgraded card soon since the 6800 Ultra line died off

RMA or did they tell you what the problem was?

RMA basically, they had no specific thing they blamed it on, just decided the GPU must be faulty.

Just a small update, looked on my AW order status and they are upgrading the card to the 8800GTS 320mb Superclocked Edition. Have to say that Alienware deserves a big thumb up for the resolution to this issue.

Also happened to get a great representative that proceeded to have a nice casual chat about gaming

That is good news.

Sure hope everything goes well with the new card, pd!

(BTW, I thought the Alienware was Mom's computer )

It is of course, it's just that I do the care-taking give it it's monthly cleanings and keep it running as best possible.

Must say, bad part is that the Pentium 4 in there will probably bottleneck the card pretty badly but at least I know that it'll push the system as far as it can go graphically while matched with the P4.

I'm sure my mom's 2D games will surely see the benefits of the card!

Also, anybody else have heat problems with the Predator case in general? I find that it just does not cool very well. The 80mm side fan doesn't do very well because of the grating and the front fan i barely feel any intake. And almost all of the time they are blowing out pretty hot air. (compared to my previous TT armor case setup)

The overall design just seems to neglect major heat dispersal. Now, this could be because of the overheating GPU, but overall I still don't feel it cools itself very well.

Any opinions welcomed

Also, just felt like sharing that I find it absolutely hilarious that after getting the part to Newark NJ (only about 1 hour away) they flew it to anchorage Alaska......
