zv6000 won't load windows

I just bought a zv6000 that I though I could fix easily. It will power up into bios just fine but when it goes to load windows it will just sit at a blank screen. I noticed that there are no screws holding in the hard drive caddy to the laptop, could the movement from that over time damage the input for the hard drive. I have tested the hard drive on another laptop and it is good. Any one have any idea what is wrong?

i would look into getting another drive caddy first, and possibly the connector to the caddy itself

cheers ...

I have heard on other threads that you are good with zv6000's, I am glad you replied. Well when I start it up it has the screen that says press f10 to get into setup and whatever other buttons you can press then it goes right to the blank screen. I will shut it down and then start it up again and it will ask me to start windows normally or go into safe mode, safe mode also won't boot up. I was planning on opening it and looking at the soder on the pins connecting the hd connector to the motherboard.

I have also heard that ikenfixit is good with these laptops, do you know him?

If you have not done this yet, a good place to start is to get into the bios, and make sure that it is on the default settings. Have you been able to hit F-10 and access the bios successfully?

OK, then next question, have you tried F-11 to do a full recovery?

those models DO NOT have a recovery partition. it has to be done with cds/dvds.

back to subject....

when you get the hp logo on the screen, hit the Escape key just once and you will see the POST screen. there it will display if the hard drive is being detected by the unit.

try booting into safe mode. right after the HP logo, start hitting F8 and then you will get a black screen with white text and there you will see the option to boot into SAFE MODE. if it boots into safe mode, i would start with uninstalling the video adapter driver.

if it doesn't boot, i would next move onto the ram. see if there is non-HP ram in the unit. sometimes people buy upgrades but its not compatible with the unit and will cause issues like this and other ones as well. hp ram will have a white sticker with a HP part number on it that will have only numbers and look something like this: ######-001

do these steps and let me know whats up, then we can try other things if this doesnt help. good luck!

Yep, I was about a year off! My "bad"!

If it does not boot into safe mode, or the re-installation of graphics driver does not work, would it be worth it to order the recovery disk(s) from HP?

no because the bottom of the unit will have the windows xp key so u can get a copy from a friend and enter your key and you can get the hardware drivers off HP's website for free
