laptop memory: pc2700 vs pc3200

Thread Starter
hello all

i'm making an upgrade to my old acer aspire 2023 laptop. It still uses DDR memory so it will be an expensive upgrade.

However, pc2700 (333 mhz) and pc3200 (400 mhz) sticks cost exactly the same - i'm buying Hynix memory btw. The difference between them, besides the clock speed, is the CAS latency 2.5 to the pc2700 and 3 to the pc3200.

My system runs 333 mhz memory, but eventually i will want to overclock the front side bus.

I am under the impression that the pc3200 memory is exactly the same as pc2700, except that the latter reached higher clock speeds when the modules were tested in the factory.

So my question is, if i buy the pc3200 and stick them to my laptop without overclocking, it will revert to 333 mhz clock speed, but will it revert to CAS latency 2.5?

waiting for a hardware guru to respond...

The answer is probably Yes. If the ram is rated at 3 at 3200 is will probably be rated at 2.5 at 2700. The only way to know for sure is to ask the manufacturer or try and find specs. Worst case scenario, if it is rated at 3 at 2700, it will just cause all of yoru ram to run at 2700 and 3 cas. A motherboard will choose the best speed and timing option that all of the memory supports. It cannot mix speeds. If your question was whether faster ram runs at lower speeds, the answer is absolutely, just as faster processors can also run at lower speeds. Memory also overclocks just like processors. If memory is rated at 333 (2700), it may or may not overclock to 366. I have never seen a laptop wth overclocking options in the bios though, so good luck with that one. If they are the same price, I would probably go for the 3200 just for resale value reasons.

The latency in nsec of DDR400 with a CAS of 3 is the same as DDR333 at CAS 2.5. So all the manufacturer has to do to get the module to run at 333@2.5 is write the setting into the SPD. I've never seen a DDR400 module of any type that didn't have a 333/2.5 entry in its timing table.

Like bobosoft said, the PC3200 will work just fine, but laptops and overclocking don't go together so much.
