Alternatives to Asus Eee PC

Thread Starter
I'm considering getting an Asus Eee PC to compliment my desktop. I need it just for web browsing, productivity and such. I also like it because it's small and portable. I was wondering if there were other notebooks like the Eee PC on the market that may be better. I'm willing to buy used, so older models that fit these requirements are good suggestions. My budget is around $400.

eee is about as good as they come. there is the NEC model or whatnot. you can also do the "give one, get one" for OLPC XO....still valid for a few days

Sadly all comparative models are either slower or more expensive the Asus is as good as your gonna get.

The Palm Folio is suppose to be down the similar line i think.

one thing that keeps me away is the idea that the hd's since its flash memory and its likely onboard.... it will slowly die and when it dies it can't be replaced.... but at same time there is always what some are doing which is using as little of the onboard flash as they can and using sd sticks mainly:P.... slower but allows for thing to last longer:P

otherwise they kick ass

heheh smilepak... on the days of wireless, who needs that (even if you receive guests that much, odds are they have their own notebooks)... i don't know... i would use it as the portable typewriter of the 21st century... *very* small net/office/whatever that you can bring to mostly anywhere... sounds very good for the $$

// the bad thing about the foleo, imo, is that it could never really replace a notebook... or anything else. everything you could do with the foleo you could better with the equipment already available. the eee, imho, can be better than a 'regular' notebook in some specific situations (also accounting price, of course).

An OLPC? lol j/k. I would suggest looking on the For Sale forum for an older portable core solo or pentium M ultraportable laptop. Perhaps a Dell 700M might be a good choice.

the harddisk is a solid state drive, so it will actually outlast a normal harddrive, and is more rugged and will be less likely it would crash or lose data from impact compared to a mechanical harddrive. it also has less power consumption, and in some cases is faster than a harddrive such as wake up or startup on windows. hope it helps
