Macbook Pro Ram needed

Thread Starter
Hey I know this is talked about a lot, but cant find exact answers by searching. I have a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.4.10. 2.16 GHz core duo and have 1gb 667MHz Ram.
I am looking to upgrade to 2gb of ram. I know I need 667Mhz 5300 DDR2 ram.

Should I just use the apple 1gb stick and add another 1gb stick, or should I replace both with the same kind/brand 1gb sticks? Do matching brands matter? Im looking for the best performace.

Also, should I go with crucial ram or is there a better option for our macbooks?

THANKS!!

It says "BANK 0/DIMM 0 Empty" and "Bank 1/DIMM 1 has 1gb DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz"

So yah im pretty sure there is only one stick

any 200pin DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) So-Dimm works with the macbook pro. Since apple switched to Intel, ram has been easier for upgrades without the need to buy specific ram (except speed/size)

You haven't needed to buy specific RAM for years.

I just picked up the cheapest stuff on New Egg for my PPC PowerBook.

would it be better two have 2 1gb sticks or one 2gb stick? Also, should I keep each stick the same brand or can I keep the apple one and say get a crucial one?

2x1 will let you take advantage of the dual channel capabilities of the machine which will give you a bit of a speed boost over 1x2.

ok...so one slot can handle 2gb? Thanks for the help

Yep I have both of my MBP running 4gb (2 x 2gb). Newegg has 2x2gb stick combos for the MBP for $109 after MIR $140 purchase price

basically if you have a Santa Rosa chipset, you're good to go up to 4GB. I got 2 single sticks of 2GB A-data from newegg for $60 after rebate and a paypal promotion. Some of the prices I've seen since then on the different brands have actually beaten that price.

Bring up About This Mac... and tell me what it says under Processor.

OP.. if your processor speed is 2.2Ghz, 2.4Ghz or 2.6Ghz it is Santa Rosa.

As you mention in your original post that you have a 2.16Ghz processor then no you don't have a Santa Rosa chip.

And also wouldn't a Santa Rosa chip require 800Mhz memory? Cant remember.

All of that is correct. However, to clarify your end part there... the processor in the newer MacBooks and MacBook Pros uses an 800MHz Front Side Bus, but still only utilizes DDR2-667 RAM.
