Windows Vista can't detect my CPU or Ram

So I've upped my desktop to 4GB from 2GB. Great upgrade, works great, everything's fast even for a 32-bit system.

However, on the welcome screen, it can't detect my CPU or Memory. It has before, it detected what type of CPU/Speed, Amount of Ram, etc. Its not much of a bother, but still, it looks ugly without it. My ratings are gone too due to the lack of information here.

Anyone know a fix to this?

Have you tried to update your Windows Experience Index in VISTA? try that, doing this will update your info ratings ,also go in to the System's Device Manager, and look under your CPU and update the drivers for that? if Vista still cannot see the full 4GB RAM, you will have to wait until Vista's SP-1 due-out this spring 2008, I hear, that the new Vista Service Pack 1 allows 32bit Vista to see the 4GB RAM Addressing, but here's the bad news, 4GB addressing, just cannot work in a 32bit OS, and not even SP1 is gonna fix this..........

I have updated the index, the performance rating shows up but not in the welcome screen or "more info". I am using SP1, just the RC version of it. Knowing microsoft, it'll probably be the same version as final.

edit: i can't update the driver for the CPU because it detects the CPU drivers and it reads it correctly also.

Humm , I'd uninstall The BETA RC 1 as it's not final ,sounds like a BUG to me, I would never install BETA's of my main Rig, do it on a test system ONLY
do you have a Backup of Vista before you went the BETA RC 1 route? if you do, I'd go back to that if I were you

I have a back up... just not pre-sp1. The weird part is that i have sp1 rc installed on my macbook running the business edition and it can detect the 4 gb total. Im not using x64 version either. right npw the ultimate edition isnt much then home premium with bitlocker for me.

Yeah, but I love the Complete PC Backup feature, Vista Home Premium just doesn't come with that, so, it was worth it for me

This problem's annoying. I'm just going to reinstall vista ultimate all together... except this time, I'll go with the x64 edition.

Found the problem. Apparently, Vista cannot read RAM amounts thats not either 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 768, 1024 MB format. If for some reason, the OS only reads something such as 744MB, It kills the detection of the CPU/Ram.

Obviously, theres a fault with Vista here, both in SP1 and Non-SP1

This is somewhat unrelated, but if you're running 32bit vista, you can't use your 4gb of ram normally anyways due to how memory addresses get mapped. See this page - http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/ar...14/699521.aspx
(It's actually a great blog if you're interested in how your OS works)

So yes, it's definitely a good idea to go with the 64-bit version if you want to make use of all your RAM.
