Terrible Vista problems!

Recently bought a 200 gig hd... figured I would upgrade to vista while I was at it...

On XP, I could run Counter-Strike:Source at 1920x1200 w/ all settings to high, 4xaa, 8xaf and would manage between 60-100fps depending on the situation.

On Vista, with the same settings... IM HOVERING IN THE LOWER TEENS! I mean... I knew vista would give me a performance hit... but CMON NOW!. There has to be an explanation for this! I followed the installing vista guide that is stickied here... (except I have the 64 bit edition so I used the 64bit dell drivers).

Other games, such as Team Fortress 2, have showed the same symptoms... Any idea? Time to downgrade to the ugly and old XP... I will say that for normal desktop use, vista kicks the crap out of XP.

EDIT: System = XPS 1710 w/ T7400, 2 Gig ram, 7900 GS

Welcome to Vista world.

We will need a little more details.

What video drivers are you using? Did you install SP1 for Vista (you can actually download pre-release version)
You will definitely need newer drivers than stock dell ones if your going to game on it. 64bit Vista is probably the bottom of the barrel when it comes to performance and compatibility. Team fortress 2 has higher minimum requirements than CSS as well.

Have you tried turning off the Aero stuff? That should help...
Aero is turned off when your running an app that calls for DirectX.

My best fix is Format C and re install XP lol

I have the 169.09 VS M6 drivers from our ol GeforceTony (or whatever hes callin himself now lol) from the forums here... all my other drivers are from the dell website.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I decided to reinstall vista and see if that helps... right now ive installed all drivers and I'm doing a windows update... next will be source and CSS to see if im still plagued with terrible fps... I really dont want to go back to xp...

You'll need the following drivers, and I've provided them below. It's also best to install them in the order that they're listed below. I was feeling nice so I did all of the legwork in searching out the drivers for you.

Notebook System Software - Dell Notebook System Software 5.2.0 64-Bit Vista
Motherboard Chipset - (Dell) Intel Mobile Chipset Driver 8.2.0.1014 and (Dell) Ricoh R5C832 Driver 3.51.01 64-Bit Vista
Video - Download the latest (or your preferred] Dell, LaptopVideo2Go or NBF MobileForce VS (Vista) driver.
Ethernet - (Dell) Broadcom 57XX Gigabit Ethernet Driver 10.46 64-Bit Vista
Wireless - Depends on what your Wireless Card is on what driver you need, but either download the appropriate driver from Dell, or from the manufacturer of your card.
Modem - (Dell) Conexant D110 Modem Driver 7.58.0.50 64-Bit Vista
Sound - (Dell) Sigmatel STAC-9200 C-Major HD-Audio Driver 6.10.0.5609 64-Bit Vista
Touchpad - (Dell) Synaptics Touchpad Driver 9.1.18.6 64-Bit Vista
Bluetooth (IF NEEDED) - Download the appropriate driver for your Bluetooth module from Dell.
Others - Dell QuickSet 8.2.19 64-Bit Vista and I8kFanGUI 3.1

Why thank you... I did install them in that exact order, and I'm pretty sure those are the exact same drivers I installed as well... I still get 5-10fps in CSS even with a fresh install... If I turn off the AA my fps jump back up to 30-60fps... but my gameplay isn't fluid... every few seconds I experience some "lag" but it isn't connection related.

Setting CSS to 1440x900 with no AA nets me over 100fps with under 20 people, and 30-60 with 32 people...

Hmmmm... upon further inspection.. those are different drivers than I used. My drivers were found by loggin into dell.com and using my service tag. I then switched the list from xp to Vista 64bit and downloaded all said drivers.. I guess I'll format a 3rd time and see if these drivers fix my problems

Well wow thanks Fenux... that list probably wasn't easy to come by. I've been using the search on dell.com to see how you found these drivers and I must say it's no easy task. If this fixes my problem... thanks alot! Time to reinstall again! Yippeee

All of those drivers that I posted are the 64-bit versions of the drivers I posted in my Vista/XP Reinstall thread, posted HERE.

It baffles me that Dell doesn't update their drivers very much, and drivers for other systems (many of those drivers I posted are made for the XPS M1730 or Precision M6300) work fine with "older" systems, like the M1710, Precision M90, and Inspiron 9400/E1705. It was even harder having to sometimes decode Dell's version/naming scheme. But, now that I figured it out, it's alot easier.

One thing I must note, the driver I put up for the modem originally for you is the wrong driver. D'oh. For some reason I thought you had an M1730, so I provided the modem driver for that laptop's modem, instead of the M1710 (which I see you have). Again, the right driver is up there now in the list. Being tired and doing things like that can lead to mistakes, lol.

It's the indexing.

Search around on how to turn that off, or wait a few days.

you said, you feel the lag every few seconds, it's most likely the hd is too busy doing indexing when it is not supposed to (MS said it will only do it when it's not using HD).

Thanks so much Fenuxx! It looks like the drivers you posted were the key to getting back my FPS. Tommorrow after work I shall be burning those to a CD so I'll have them for next time. You truely are an asset to these forums!
