Start up problem w/ HP ZE4125

Ok so this is my older computer but I still use it sometimes. I went to shower and set it up on the counter and signed on to AIM and put an away message up. When I came back I guess I pulled the power cord to far and one of the wires unplug from the rectangular a/c adapter I guess it is. Well the computer was off when I got back. I tried to turn it back on with it unplug and it will not turn on. Then I plugged the cord back in and the computer will still not turn on.

I hit the power button and some of the lights come on but then they go right back off.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks,
Blake

Ouch, may have caused a short! What you might try doing: Unplug the AC, pull off the battery, take out the ram, and then, carefully, re-insert it, plug in the AC (you might try leaving the battery off...possible that it was shorted out?), and try powering up.

Another possibility is that the power adpater took a beating. If all else fails, you may try using a different power adapter. if you do not have access to one that matches your laptop, you can at least try one of the "universal" adapters available, at least to see if that is an issue or not.

Would it be the power adapter if the green light still comes on the power adapter and when I plug it in I can tell that it charges the computer because the light (orange) comes on for charging and then the green light comes on for completely charged? I will have to try the ram method when I get home. However, if it shorted out would it just affect the ram?

Most likely it is not the power adapter, but, never hyrts to make sure.

As far as re-seating the ram goes, this is a recommended step by HP, I think that it makes sure that there are no residual stuck settings even at a very miniscule level of power, as well as the more obvious issue of making sure that there isn't any issue of poor ram contact due to oxidation.

This is more of a "try it, it can't hurt, and you just never know" suggestion. I will say that sometimes a corrupted battery can cause turn-on problems, even when using the AC adapter, which is why I mentioned trying it with the battery off.

If one of these things does not work, then it is pretty much a matter of getting it serviced...and since you said it was an older notebook, I would iomagine that means it is out of warranty.

It does not sound like a hard drive issue, or screen issue, but it could be ram-related, or a mainboard issue...

Thanks for the response...
I will try to the ram setup, I have tried turning it on with the battery in and out of it. Also, I will try a new power adapter. Other then that, I hope I do not have to send it in because they will try to charge me so much money Im sure.

CBlakeNS, I hope that works, because I am afraid that you are exactly right: If this doesn't work, you are pretty much at the point of needing it serviced, and you are right...it generally gets kind of "pricey"...
