I have a NP4780, have had it since 2004 without a single problem to date. Just the other day it started acting up.
1) The fan randomly dosent come on. I do keep it very clean though. I regularly open up the back and blow out the dust from the inside. Also I re-did the artic silver on the cpu "as there wasnt really any to speak of when I bought it. I have re-checked the fan connections, and everything seems to be ok. I keep the laptop raised off of my desk with an additionla cooling fan underneath to suply cool air as well.
2) Now my video is being corrupted. Not just in games but even on mydesktop. The corruption shows even on the boot up screen. I pulled the keyboard and cleaned under the metal plate as well as putting new artic silver on the vid chip to make better contact with the metal plate. I noticed that if I press on the laptop my vid would correct its self. Seeing this I decided to check for loose connections. I re-seated the ram on the mchine as one of mine had come unclipped.
Well now not even pushing on the laptop case will fix the vid corruption. The corruption appears as blue boxes all over the screen when in indows. In games it appears as majoy artifacting. I do not have th video or cpu overclocked.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. I use the laptop for so much, that sending it off to Sager is not an option I look forward to.
