HP 6685: fan never turns off, is it normal?

Hi everyone,

I've just purchased a HP DV6685 and the fan never turns off. As soon as the machine is switched on, the fan starts. From then on it varies between running at a very slow speed and very fast. There is no correlation with what the computer is being used for either. With the machine idling overnight, and processor usage at 2-5% the fan just keeps running!

Is this 'normal' behaviour for this model, or do I just have a lemon?

My previous machine, a HP ZT3000 is so quiet, and the fan only ever turns on when processor usage is at 100%.

Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. I mostly want to know if this is just a characteristic of this model that I need to live with, or if there is a fault in my laptop.

Many thanks

I really do not know for sure, but it would disturb me a bit. I have the dv6625us, which is not wildly different, and the fan does not spen a lot of time "on".

It is very disturbing indeed. What operating system are you using? Mine is Vista and I am curious if that might have something to do with it.

I am running Vista Home Premium, so I do not expect that to be the cause. I just can't help but get the feeling that your fan runninng that consistently is a problem.

This might be cause to either have it looked at for repair/replacement, especially while it is new.

Hi Pete, thanks for getting back to me. I'm going to try taking it to the store I bought it at, and see if I can get them to issue a replacement. I really dont want to get a 4 day old purchase repaired.

Cheers.

Definitely! I don't know about where you live, but around here, a purchase that recent has to be accepted back by the store be it for replacement, or refund.

I was able to get it replaced today and the replacement machine is much quieter. The fan does run quite often still, but it does switch off and when it is running it does so at much lower RPM's.

Getting it replaced wasn't as easy as it should be. The guy at the store didn't really believe there was a valid problem with the machine....

On the downside the new machine has a rather annoying though innocuous problem. The right hand end of the spacebar makes an annoying clacking sound like a really cheap keyboard. It's like the right end of the keyboard is much looser than the left, like its missing a spring underneath it or something. It's quite loud!

I'd rather not have to get another replacement if I can help it.... does it sound like the kind of thing that might turn into a bigger problem later on, in your opinion?

Thanks again.

It may not, but you know what? If it bothers you, it bothers you. Granted, the store folks may not fall in love with you, but, it is YOUR MONEY!

After all, that characteristic will NOT get better over time, even if it does not get any worse. I would not think it unreasonable if you take it back one more time...

I have to agree, its your choice. Go back, get another. The store WONT love you, but all they have to do is check it before it goes out to a customer, parting with hard earned cash!
