Macworld 2008

I know its a bit..well premature to make this thread a full 2 weeks before macworld but here goes.

A couple of my friends have been...well eyeballing a MB or MBP, so they've asked me their opinion and such. But I really dont know what to say. This one guy is the reason I'm making the thread hes going to need his computer by around Jan 20th.

So my question is should he hold out for macworld (with the rumors of peryn based MBPs and such) or should he just buy now?

Im confused as to when exactly macworld presentation is all I can find is the conference length (Jan 14th-18th) which..well confuses me.

When will new products be made available should they be announced?

ex. If a product is announched on the 14th..can I go and get it on the 15th?
How about the 18th?

Thanks in advance for all the help, and feel free to predict anything else happening at Macworld.

Always hold out for Macworld.

They might release something they might not but if they do you'll be kicking yourself if you bought before.

a lot of predictions are floating around about a refreshed MBP. not so much on MB simply because of how recent and significant the latest update came. I would wait anyway, because 2 weeks is soon, especially if you've been holding out longer. keynote is the tuesday of that week.

Not so much a refresh on the MBP, but rather the one that is floating(And seems to be eternally floating for the past year or two) in an ultraportable version...

Course they are still saying 12"-13" screen size, so why they call it ultraportable is beyond me. Personally no matter what, it is worth the wait to wait until Macworld to spend any money.

penryn is supposed to debut in the MBP, at least definately before going into the MB and it is overkill for an ultraportable atm. that's where the MBP speculation comes from- also since the design is relatively old. either way, expect some big computer news.

MBP got the Santa Rosa and LED Screens last June, not to long ago. If anything was to happen I would bet more along the lines of the 17" getting the LED backlit screen for the moment.

Also, when making a switch along those lines it is not uncommon to see minor boosts in specs for apple to try to work through old stock by sneaking in some of it as surprise upgrades to models ordered. Haven't seen that one yet either.

there was the underpromoted update from 2.4-2.6 and 160GB-200GB for top of the line MBP in november. sounds like you're spot on- but reading the clues wrong.

Nah what I am referring to would be completely un-promoted at all really. A couple of times near a product overhaul now they have started shipping, without telling anyone including the person ordering and paying, upgraded ram, or processors in the box. Literally the only way to know that it happened was to turn on the computer and check under the system profiler, or open it up.

You do have a point that Apple might be quick to jump on the Penryn bandwagon. I am still not expecting it myself though. As I mentioned, I expect a slight bump or refresh, no major overhauls on the Pro line though.

I will say though I am keeping my eyes open on Macworld though for other reasons. I came to the conclusion tonight I am going to be investing in Mac Server I believe just for ease of administration for our computers here, and probably putting it on a Mini. Have to wait and see what happens in that regards, there are still rumors floating about the mini being axed, but I am hoping that one don't happen, along with me not seeing it to likely considering how much of a failure their Apple TV unit has been short of hacking it.

To dang Lazy to learn/set-up/and maintain a kerberos/LDAP/etc. server. Not replacing his Linux server, just augmenting with a dumbed down admin interface in a shiny box

Apple TV will have some new stuff, small minor upgrades to MBP, not worth stewing over if you need a notebook now and really how much faster do you think it will be?

The big updates will be in the Macpro area and a few new smaller gadgets etc..

Well the part I was expecting got here a bit earlier than I expected...

Makes me wonder if apple is going to bother with computers at all there
