Overheating Video Card and Dell Support

Hi all,

For the past month or so, my M170 has been overheating, oftentimes reaching temps of over 100 degreess which causes the video card to throttle down to about half speed after 2-3 minutes. Well, today I finally decided to contact Dell to see if they could help me solve the problem. They took me through the usual steps such as updating video drivers, running Dell diagnostics, etc. Anyway, after working through the troubleshooting process and not finding a solution, the tech support told me to lower the hardware acceleration in the display settings. I asked him if this would simply be the same as throttling the card down myself. He admitted it would be so I told him that was not a satisfactory solution since the throttling of the card was what I was trying to avoid in the first place. I then asked him if it was possible to receive a replacement video card but he said that since the Dell Diagnostics came back fine, and the computer was not experiencing any crashes, he could not offer me that option. So we basically left it at that, and he apologized for not being able to offer an adequate solution.

However, I am kinda disappointed in how the whole thing turned out. My computer is not working properly, and Dell is not able to fix it. What should I do now?

Get on Dell chat again, and let them know its a serious problem. Make sure to make it sound like you've already tried everything, and that you know its a serious problem. The operators normally will ship you a new part right away as long as you let them know you've tried everything already.

Get CC so when you get too frustrated with Dell chat and you slam your head into the keyboard, they will cover the damages and send you a new laptop!

In a related question, is Dell still replacing go 7800's with 7800's? I had my 7800 replaced for the heat issue and they just gave me another 7800. I still have the heat issue, but control it with i8kfan. I would like to get it replaced with a 7900 so I don't have the heat issue, but have been waiting to see if they burn thru the 7800's. Any other 1705 owners have any recent experiences with replacement?

wow I didn't know they still had the old 7800s still. What happened with most people was to continue complaining after the replacement and then to tell the rep that there is a known heat problem with 7800 cards (which there is/was, and Dell knows it) and that you are tired of replacing problem parts with more problem parts and ask them for an upgrade.

Thats what I was thinking. Guess its time to talk to India! (After I remove my I8kfanGUI )

Add some Arctic Silver 5 to the GPU. The 7800GTX starts to throttle down once it reaches 105 degrees celsius.

Unless I missed something here we're talking about the 7800go vanilla and not the 7800 GTX.

Have an online chat session with Dell and hang firm on it. My GPU before was overheating and they never went through any of this BS with me, just got to the point and sent a new card so I'm sure you just have to find the right guy

I had overheating problems with my 7800 GO and had it replaced 3 times. the Third time they upgraded me to the 7900GS. Then a couple months after that my mobo went out and I had it switched. When I got it back I still had problems and asked for a system exchange. Since they do not make the E1705 they were going to give me a free upgrade to the 1720. I made it clear that I had to have DVI for school and they still tried to give me a 1720. So I called the rep that was handling my case and explained how upset I was and he agreed and is sending me a M1730. 2.2ghz, 2gb, 120gb 7200, 8700M GT SLI, Vista Ultimate. If you keep on them and are firm but respectful you will get what you want. Good luck.

Well, I finally was able to convince Dell that my video card was actually experiencing problems (I have a 6800 Ultra btw). A tech came out on Thursday and replaced the two fans and heatsinks but the card is is still over heating and throttling. Does anyone know if the card bios can be edited so that it will not throttle if it reaches a certain temperature?

Haha I would definately not advise that as a solution of you will end up with a fire/hole in your motherboard!

Call Dell and tell them it isn't fixed! They should give you a new card.

My 6800 Ultra goes to 225 degress before overheating...
The Dell Diagnostics do not test overheating anyway
My sound passed the diagnostics but it was screwing with me
But there sending a tech with a new motherboard my way !!!!

Just escalate it.

You guys do realize all you probably have to do is just CLEAN that laptop out from all the dust build up and your overheating issues will go away, right?
