9750 issues

Ok so my 9750 freezes while playing World of Warcraft after awhile. The screen goes all crazy and it just locks up. It is on a chill pad, fans are all the way up. I re-Arctic Silver'd the Vid card to its heatsink. I reinstalled the Vid drivers. I think the Vid card (7800GTX) is bad, what do you all think? It only seems to happen when gaming (I only play WoW) and has just started this recently.

Can't seem to post the photo so here is the link to the photo online.

I had that exact same screenshot (click here for pics) on my DESKTOP and turned out the graphics card was overheating. i suspect you may be experiencing similar issues. Try cleaning the fans with a can of compressed air. I know you WoWers spend a lot of time gaming so you might just need to do some easy clean up.

I usually blow it out once a week, but when this started happening I went through the effort to open it up and make sure it was all cleaned up, that is also when I took out the Card and reapplied Arctic Silver between it and the heatsink. So I guess I will call PCTorque and see what it is going to take to buy a new one . . . I figured it was overheating partially because I was using an Audigy PCMCIA card, and it would get smoking hot and framerates would drop for a short time intermittently, so I even removed that while gaming to help with heat dissapation. I fear the card is damaged from the heat overtime now.

Ok so I just got off the phone with Sager and they are telling me that the 7800GTX is no longer made. So I asked about upgrading to the 7950GTX and he tells me the 7950GTX is also no longer made . . . then hung up on me when I asked what I should do get my Laptop fixed . . . So now I guess I have a gaming computer that doesnt play games . . . I guess I need to build a desktop and leave the Laptop world for the non-gamers.

I also have a 9750 whose 7800gtx seems to be dying due to heat. The heat radiating from it (always *very* hot) has gotten worse. I've usually underclocked it to keep this in check. I also recently removed the heatsink to apply fresh thermal compound, and this helped briefly, but now the throttling is regular despite how underclocked or cooled the laptop is. It's actually worse now than it was a month ago when it was just running nuclear hot and the slowdowns/throttling was more predictable.

I've had it for 2 years, but had hoped to get more time out of it, Warcraft has always run perfectly on it.

Edit: I finally got RivaTuner working and monitoring the card. I'm playing with even further underclocking trying to find a new lower speed it's happy at to see if this can extend it's life.

I've had similar issues with my 9750, which i bought brand new 2 years ago, to the day..

Not so much the crazy stuff on the screen.. usually mine would lock up. I had it on a cooling pad pretty much the entire time I owned it. I also played WoW on mine, so yeah.. I was using for decent periods of time..

Recently, It locked up, which it hasn't done in a while and it was much hotter than i've ever felt it.. I've had trouble keeping it on now as the video card fan doesn't kick on at all and eventually just shuts the computer down itself.. before I'm even running an application even..

I don't know what the problem is honestly.. It seems like it'll stay on for a little while, but if i even move the laptop the slightest bit it shuts off, as if something isn't making a solid contact.

I also think my laptop days are over

Yeah my 9750 which I bought 2 years and 1 month ago is toast.
I am actually here looking for the warranty info ad found this thread.

My issues were: Bad USB ports (4 are toast for some reason).
Bad LCD, bad card reader etc.
I actually had other problems but had the local computer shop fix them because I didnt want to wait a month for my rig back.
Originally they were shocked at the lack of thermal compound. There was almost none.

Anyway off to continue my search!

Yeah, I had problems with my usb ports as well.. they weren't toast completely, but a little crispy :P

My mouse would stop working from time to time.. It would take a restart to get em back working.. Weird, and never did figure out what that problem was..

Also, agree with the small amount of thermal compound..

post here if you find any info at all.. mine is still sitting lonely and I can't stand the fact that I spent this much just 2 years ago to watch it sit there broken..

thanks

Tigga, my mouse would stop working also. Same with my headset.
Also if I put pressure on my left wrist while typing sometimes it would give me "new hardware has been detected".
I moved since I bought mine so I am searching everywhere for all of my info.

The PC repair shop called sager and sager told them it would be $500 to repair the LCD and fix the other issues so i am going to call sager and get the specifics and send it to them. Worth it if they fix it properly. It will be my new back up.
Try calling sager directly and see what they say. They may fix it for a lot less than anyone else. My PC shop was going to be over a grand.
I ended up buying a MacBook Pro with 4 gigs of ram. I am putting parallels on it tomorrow and I'll try to play some games and see how it goes.

Unfortunately, I have to run windows to do a lot of stuff.

I've been having lockup issues with a 7900GTX, thankfully I originally bought the thing with a 7800, and upgraded about a year and a half ago, so I have a backup card. Though hearing about the small amount of thermal compound I will probably have to take apart the 7800 to make sure it has enough.

I've been calling up Clevo distributors to see if they have any GFX modules in stock, little luck yet, but even if I find one I've been told the price on these modules new is in the 500-700 range, and I honestly don't know how much I want to get price gouged on a 2 year old piece of computer equipment.
