CES festivities actually begin on Saturday, January 5th in Sin City.

There should be several announcements of interest during the event.

You can go to www.cesweb.org for event information and press releases. Several sites around the net will also be streaming some of the events.

Make sure to post your updates here!

The folks at BiTMICRO are about to blow some doors off of the SSD truck with a new product they'll be showing at CES this year. According to a press release, the company is introducing a new, 2.5-inch solid-state drive with a whoppping 832GB of NAND flash goodness. The 3Gb SATA drive is a new addition to the company's E-Disk Altima line, and utilizes a technology the company calls multi-level cell (or MLC) memory, which apparently doubles the number of bits stored per memory cell when compared with single-level cell (SLC) NAND. The drives are expected to ship Q3 2008 in capacities ranging from 32GB to 832GB -- and you can be sure we'll be staring intently at them (and asking for demo units) as soon as CES rolls around.

An update.

Sure, your bed is pretty comfortable. you probably even have one of those plush down mattress covers. You may have convinced yourself that you're in the lap of luxury, but according to Leggett & Platt -- you're nowhere close. Enter the Starry Night bed, the be-all-end-all when it comes to breakneck, nosebleed opulence, and unparalleled extravagance. The sleeper not only combines dual, remote-controlled, adjustable mattresses with temperature control and anti-snore technology (whatever that is), but also manages to embed a 1080p HD projector, four subwoofers and tweeters, a 1.5TB of drive space, 4GB of RAM, Media Center integration, WiFi, and an iPod dock. Seriously. All they forgot was to make it not ugly. Showing at CES 2008, and priced from $20,000 to $50,000 (depending on options).

HD DVD Group Cancels CES Press Conference

Quote:
Is this the final nail in the coffin for HD DVD?

The news just continues to sour for the HD DVD camp. Earlier today, DailyTech reported that Warner Bros. decided to go Blu-ray exclusive by the end of May 2008. Warner Bros. executives backed their decision by saying that the move was beneficial for consumers.

"A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry," stated Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group President Kevin Tsujihara.

Toshiba, clearly stunned by the announcement, issued a press release of its own stating its disappointment with the decisions by Warner Bros.

"We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and valuate potential next steps," said Toshiba in a statement. "We remain firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer."

It looks as though the fallout from the Warner Bros. move is coming fast and furiously. The DailyTech inbox was just moments ago greeted with the following message from a Toshiba representative regarding CES press meetings and the scheduled HD DVD press conference:

Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, the HD DVD Promotional Group has decided to cancel 1:1 press meetings at CES, in addition to the press conference that was scheduled for Sunday evening. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause…
We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD's commitment to quality and affordability -- a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format.
We’ll continue to keep you updated on new developments around HD DVD.

It looks as though HD DVD may be on life support considering this latest series of events. Many consumers have been disheartened by the whole HD DVD vs. Blu-ray format war, but it looks as though a white flag may soon be planted.
Could Blu-Ray become the final standard? Quite possibly. Even Microsoft HD DVD support is waning.

CES 2008: Alienware Curved Seamless Display

Quote:

Alienware Delivers 2880 x 900 of Gaming Greatness

Our first little gem of a find was at Pepcom's Digital Experience event for Press Only. We came across the Alienware booth where we noticed a small crowd had been gathered for a while. As we approached, we discovered there was a good reason for the mass of reporters.

With a resolution of 2880 x 900, this beast of a monitor will not disappoint! In talking with Alienware at the event, we were informed that the Curved Seamless Display (CSD) has a refresh rate of .02ms which they claim is an order of magnitude better than the competition!

The Alienware folks were of course very serious about showing off how well Crysis demonstrates the CSD's abilities. However, according to Alienware, most of the current DX10 titles will recognize the 2880 x 900 resolution with no problems at all!

Surprisingly, the CSD only takes one DVI input for it's signal input. So while it would be enough to make your head literally spin, one could put two Curved Seemless Displays in a dual monitor configuration. Even though there is only one signal input, the CSD is actually designed by two high quality WSXGA screens put together.
Slated for release in the second half of 2008, the Curved Seamless Display by Alienware is sure to be a big hit among enthusiast gamers! Alienware declined to comment on pricing as the release date is still a ways away.

NVIDIA Hybrid SLI

Quote:
We’ll start things off with a shocker then: NVIDIA is going to putting integrated GPUs on all of their motherboards. Yes, you’re reading that right, soon every NVIDIA motherboard will ship with an integrated GPU, from the highest end enthusiast board to the lowest end budget board. Why? Hybrid SLI.

It’s no secret that enthusiast-class GPUs have poor power performance, even when idling they eat a lot of power. It’s just not possible right now to make a G80 or G92 based video card power down enough that it’s not sucking at least some non-trivial amount of power. NVIDIA sees this as a problem, particularly with the most powerful setups (2 8800GTXs for example) and wants to avoid this problem in the future. Their solution to this is the first part of Hybrid SLI and the reasoning for moving to adding integrated GPUs in every board, what NVIDIA is calling HybridPower.

I think that's a pretty good idea. #1: If your GPU is fubar'd you can send it back and at least operate the system without gaming #2: It will save plenty of electricity on those whopping gaming setups.

that was some sneaky advertising right there.

I was also thinking about how big the box would be to get it shipped to your door step, I would say shipping cost alone would be over $200 + that screen is gonna be like $2000+

Cut me some slack ... anybody who can afford to buy this puppy is not going to be concerned about replacing a few bulbs.

And, for all the DLP haters out there ... unless you've seen a good one (and one that has been professionally calibrated) ... you really haven't seen what DLP can do.

Yeah, it is from Alienware yanno.

After looking at that monitor, I don't really like it. It has 4 monitors pieced together, you can see the edges pretty well.

Hmmmm, the article says "the CSD is actually designed by two high quality WSXGA screens put together." It does look like 4 sections in the pic though.

I agree with you shazza on DLP. I calibrated dads new Samsung DLP while I was up for x-mas. Looks great.

So, what does that comment mean???

I must just be in a grumpy mood tonite, but I'd think Alienware would get some credit for trying to do something innovative.

And, let me add, that I am not in the least bit interested in this display - but kudos to AW for putting something new out. It's probably awesome for some things, like racing games and flight sims, but I've got enough trouble keeping track of things on a regular display, let alone having the bad guys surround me!

it needs to work perfect out of the box or else it's worthless!

I honestly think there's a limit to the number of marketing/manufacturing disasters that groups can take. Innovative ideas aren't enough anymore it seems. If the price comes in nice this could replace my 20" and 2 17" I have... except I'd like to have the ability to run it as two displays maybe? or maybe I can't get over three displays...
