Touchpad Sensitivity Help

My Acer 5520 came with the touchpad set so sensitive that by just by passing over icons I am opening windows that I dont want to. My sisters older Acer also has an "Alps" touchpad with Alps driver and under the tapping tab in the mouse window she has a "touch sensitivity" button that adjusts from light----to-----heavy touch and thats all I need. After checking various computer stores that carry Acer and other brands it seems that some have this feature and some dont. Annoyingly also is the fact that no-one in the sales dept in these stores knows what I'm talking about and when I show them they say it's the first time they've encountered it. Surely if I'm spending over $1000. for a new notebook I should be able to control this. I have tried updating the driver from the Acer websight. Both the Synaptics and Alps drivers they offer don't have this control either. Some Acers however have it and they are not necessarily the upscale or newest models. So what gives?

this has more to do with OS registry tweak or from a 3rd party app. Acting like a Mac that opening up an app with the pointer just over it

Thanks for reply.
I know what you mean but I don't have it set to do that. Aside from that there is no adjustment in either the "Alps" or "Synaptics" driver window that I have tried for "touch sensitivity". I know it exists because I have seen it in other notebooks, brand new and older with Alps and Synaptics drivers. I can't understand why the Acer site or any of the Acer guides or manuals doesn't mention anything about it. Nothing in Alps or Synaptics website either. I know I can use a mouse if I want but feel I should be able to adjust the touchpad as many others do and I would have no problem.

Oh by the way the os is Vista Home Prem. I am getting to like it alot actually which is really something for me to admit. I origianally thought it to be a "dumbed down" version of xp but then I also thought xp to be the same from win98.

what i recommend to most people...

slow touch point just a notch or two slower

and

there is an option to disable tapping while typing, this seems to help out tremendously. When you are typing, if your palm hits the touchpad it won't move the cursor.

but, I have not been able to find a sensitivity setting either. the combination of these two settings does help.

I just downloaded this an installed it on my Aspire 5050 and it has the touch sensitivity options.

Acer uses two different touchpads. The Alps, and the Synaptics. Synaptics are far better as far as drivers. the Alps touch pad is found on the newer "Gemstone-ish" units. I personally do not really care for them. If you have an older style model (silver and black) then it is most likely synaptics.

Dumbed down touchpad

Yes, Thanks for all reply's folks and in fact I have found a couple of drivers that have "touch Sensitivity" adjustment. The Synaptics drivers seem to be better I agree but I have also learned recently that laptop manufactureres are using touchpad hardware that doesn't have the capability of adjustment. So from a hardware perspective you can load whatever drivers you want but it wont make a bit of difference if the hardware is not capable of sensing the touch (soft to hard) on the actual touchpad itself. I am also further dissapointed to find that Acer also custom builds models to suite the different major resellers such as "Futer Shop" or "The Source" and as a cost cutting measure will leave out or build cheaper alternatives to bring down the price so as to have the edge in marketing. Too bad that the marketing takes prefference over building a feature rich product in the interest of customer satisfaction. I know other manufacturers do it also as I was looking at a $2000. Sony which also had the "dumbed down touchpad". My fault for not researching enough I guess before buying.

There's a new Vista driver: ALPS Touchpad Driver 7.2.302.105 Vista 32bit
It includes sensitivity and tapping settings: "Advanced" tab > "Advanced feature settings" button > "Pointer speed and tapping settings". Fixed my Aspire 5520.

I have the same problem with my 8930 Gemstone. But since I almost always use the mouse it doesn't bother me. good to know there's a solution though !

But checking further on this on opening Mouse in control panel, I find I can adjust a lot of things from cursor to touchpad sensitivity, so i woudn't need to download anything.....and Michelle, not all Acer Gemstones have the Alps, mine is Synaptics.
