S/PDIF Output

Hello. I have the Gateway NX860XL laptop and I want to hook it up to my home theater system to get surround sound for games and movies. I have read that the audio jack does not support S/PDIF. So I need to buy a separate audio card. What are the best options for me to get the correct output to hook up to my home theater system? USB or PCMCIA? Digital Coax or Digital Optical? If anyone could help me out that would be great.

Thanks.

All denpends on what your NX860XL has a PCMCIA Slot or a Express 54 Slot, I would steer-clear from any USB sound device, as none of them even support Vista, however the above mentioned ones do

I have a PCMCIA slot. I do not have a Express slot. And I also have windows vista. I have the big PCMCIA slot. Not the new slim one.

OK, so, you have a PCMCIA Card Slot then, the slim ones are the newer Express 54 Slot type, I'm not too sure on the price, (bought mine 2 yrs ago paid about $90 for OEM Creative, $60 for a OEM Refirbushed Card), so check the website for a refirb one, cheaper than way, it comes with all the cables you need, also supports S/PDIF, EAX, 5.1/7.1 Surround Sound, this card works WELL in both XP & Vista , they are GREAT CARDS I have 2 of them, on my 7405GX & MX6453 Notebooks, I just couldn't get the sound I wanted outta the on-board sound card
